Weekend Wrap-Up

Friday
Candied PeanutsCame home, ate dinner, got bored, and made candied peanuts. Watched the Olympic opening ceremony while catching up on my Scrabulous and Scrabble games then went to sleep. God I’m boring.

Saturday
Went to Pasadena to take a tour of the California School of Culinary Arts. (Side note: I thought I was just going for a tour, but I had to take a 30-question, eight minute “quiz” and apparently I rocked it.) I fell in love with the Le Cordon Bleu Program and want to go to pastry school. And I realized that if I do get let go this Friday, it might not be such a horrible thing–I could go to school full time!

After the visit to the school, I came home and watched some of the Olympics and before I knew it, Jen Waiting for it to get darkand her friend were picking me up so we could head over to the Hollywood Forever cemetery for a Cinespia screening of Sixteen Candles. Yes, they show movies on the side of the mausoleum at the cemetery. But more importantly, JAKE RYAN! I realized the last thing I had seen Michael Schoeffling in was Mermaids, so I Googled him and according to Wikipedia, he is married with teenagers and makes furniture. Wow, not what I was expecting. Anyway, the movie was really fun, we brought food and cupcakes from Toast, and while waiting in line, I bumped into everyone’s friend (and my sister’s former boss), Drew.

Sunday
Slept in then went shopping in search of a dress to wear to a couple of weddings in the next few weeks. After trying on a ton of dresses (which by the way, isn’t easy to do when you stupidly go alone and have no one to help you with the zipper), I decided on this one. I asked the guy at Banana what color shoes to wear with it (I suck at this stuff), and he told me black. I knew that was wrong so I went to Nine West, and the salesgirl there told me gold. Still not convinced, I went to Macys, and was told “gun metal.” Huh? It’s kinda like a greyish silver. Incidentally, gun metal is very similar to the color shoe Banana shows with the dress on their website. So, gun metal it is.

Knowing I would need some sustenance for shoe shopping, I stopped at Boule for a macaron (or two, they are tiny) then tried a bunch of shoe stores and came home shoe-less and frustrated. Help! Where do I buy gun metal-ish colored sandals in August?

Now I’m going to search online while watching more of the Olympics. How great is Tivo when it comes to watching the Olympics? I can fast forward through beach volleyball and basketball and just watch swimming and gymnastics. I love it!

In other news, I am honored to have been asked to be a witness for Randi and Michael’s ketubah signing! Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ve written my name in Hebrew since my bat mitzvah–I’m going to need to find someone to write it out so I can practice, otherwise my handwriting will look like a kid’s. Can anyone help?

The dress is so cute! I still need to get one for Jake’s wedding. I would go to Nordstrom for shoes.

Also, coincidentally, I was witness at my friend Randi (a girl as well) and Josh’s wedding. I was so nervous about not remembering my Hebrew name, that I had a drink and confessed to the Rabbi right before the signing and he gave me a little cheat sheet so I just had to copy it!!!

I feel like I’m the person who is always waxing poetic about where to buy clothing/shoes on here. I think gun metal would be nice with that dress, but you could definitely get away with any kind of metallic — even copper — since they’re neutral enough. I would do gun metal/pewter, then copper or gold and silver last. You could also do a red if you wanted to be sassy. Red shoes with a blue dress can work.

If you can’t find a sandal, I imagine an open-toed or a sling back would also work — you just have to show some foot skin. Since you have sort of specific guidelines for what you want, I’d try Zappos — free shipping, plus you can search for shoes by color and/or style. Other than that, the Macy’s at the Beverly Center has a pretty reliable shoe dept, as does the Grove’s Nordstrom.

Thus endth my very, very long comment. Sorry, everyone.

Cute dress! Maybe check out Zappos.com for shoes?

Thanks guys! The Macys at the Bev Center was actually where the guy was that told me about gun metal. And Jessica, think of this as a branching out of your job. You can be the official Superjux stylist.

I’d say Steve Madden, but I think the one in the Beverly Center is temporarily closed. You could try their online site, though, or zappos.

I feel like everytime I’m about to give shopping advice jessica has beat me to the punch. I’d agree that any metallic would be nicely neutral with that dress (which is very cute, btw). you can also try shopbop for shoes. shipping (and returns) are free and they’re running a big summer sale now. I’ve had good luck there.

its too bad you’re asking on sunday - decades two had a huge $88 sale on all of their shoes on fri - if I had known you were in the market, I would have forwarded you the info. I scored a pair of stella mccartneys and a pair of chloes - each only $88.

have you tried dsw? sometimes I do suprisingly well there also. there’s one right near us at h&h.

Hilary,

The Dress is Very Cute. It will be Adorable at The Wedding. I assume you will be wearing it to Ours!

As far as Shoes go, I just was on The Hunt For Silver Shoes. Bloomingdales. Macys. Those are my suggestions. Silver and “Gun Metal” are Very In right now. You should have no probs.

Did you know that The Hollywood Forever Cemetary Screening of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” was our second date?

Don’t stress about The Hebrew.

P.S. I realize I spelled Cemetery wrong. And I think you should do The Cooking School Class. I will meet you for Lunch on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday during The School Year.

So you’re going to go to culinary school and become a world-renown chef and open your own restaurant, I’m sure. Can I make a reservation now? For a Friday night? Say around 8-ish?

Soooo jealous you have Tivo during the Olympics…

If you’re willing to do silver, there are the Naturalizer brand Prissy shoes in silver. Wore them to weddings these summer … super comfortable, cheap and cute (in my opinion anyways)

Good luck!

Gun Metal Shoes. It sounds like the name of a rock band, doesn’t it?

Good luck with the cooking school. Have you checked out how good their placement services are in terms of getting a GOOD job (or being able to start your own business) when you graduate? I presume that if you lose your current job you will have the resources to feed and house yourself as well as go to school?

Or maybe you can call your restaurant “Gun Metal Shoes.” No, wait, I’m KIDDING!

Try endless.com for shoes. The site is incredible, prices reasonable and they ship everything overnight for free. If you order by 4 pm PST you have your shoes by 12 pm the next day. It’s an amazing site - you can shop by size, color, brand, heel height, anything - I get pretty much all of my shoes there - or from Off Broadway. (You can ask your sister about my huge shoe buying problem.)

Love that dress, it is really cute and gun metal shoes would so rock with it!

It IS great to be able to DVR the Olympics and fast forward through the commercials and uninteresting sports and get right to the good stuff. I am totally suffering swimming overload, happily so of course!

I am so excited for you re: the prospect of culinary school. It is always good to see someone doing what they love.

Any metallic would work, and gunmetal will be perfect.

Cute Dress!!!

I agree, the fashion right now is jewel tones and metallics together. Any metallic would go very well.

I think we should start a band called Gun-Metal Shoes. Totally Super Cool.

Jealous of your cooking school tour — one step closer to the dream being a reality!

I was also at the 16 Candles screening! So fun! I love Molly, Anthony and Michael! Can you believe it was the first time my husband saw it? John Hughes didn’t have quite the same impact abroad!

Nordstrom Brass Plum (what they used to call their younger, less expensive section) area of shoes should have what you’re looking for. Not the Grove location though — since it’s a smaller store they tend to carry more of the mega bucks stuff. Good luck!

Connie,

I realized that a band named Gun Metal Shoes is more likely to play “Sole” music. Their strongest competition would come from the “Arch” Rivals. As long as you are not too committed to any of them, you don’t have to “toe” the line for anyone! You are wondering what is causing a “spike” in this kind of humor. As you can understand, I like to tell these bad jokes for “kicks.” However, I need to do some work so no one thinks I am a “loafer.”

Have you heard about the new high-heeled version of the gun metal shoes? They are called “Steel-lettoes.”
