Thursday Things

Did anyone else catch Matt Besser on How I Met Your Mother? I love him so much. In other TV news, the Law & Order SVU season finale not only sucked, but it was totally confusing. Speaking of Law & Order, I love this Law & Order blog so much. Is anyone else watching Top Chef? How did I just notice that Spike is kinda cute if he’s not wearing a goofy hat? Also, I want Antonia to win, what about you?

In related news, I ditched HBO! I want to rejoin Netflix or try out the Blockbuster version. Anyone have better experiences with one or the other?

If you haven’t already done so, please tell us what you’ve read lately.

Well. The Mother’s Day weekend post took a slightly unexpected and entirely too Degrassi turn, did it not? And for those of you totally confused, I may explain what led up to that absurd comment sometime in the future. Right now I just want to get back to regular blogging.
- - -
I’ll admit it–I want to see the Sex and the City movie. Who’s coming with me?
- - -
My sister bought a sunchoke/Jerusalem artichoke at Trader Joe’s the other day and has no idea what to do with it. Any recipes or suggestions for her?
- - -
My Jdate subscription ran out a while ago and I forgot to mention that I noticed the Jdate notification emails no longer tell you who emailed you, so you have join to find out. Sneaky. And sucky.
- - -
Hopefully I’m not jinxing myself by saying this, but I haven’t had so much as a cold in over six months! I guess I spent enough time sick in 2006 that I’m good for quite a while now, eh?

This week’s question: How are you spending/did you spend your economic stimulus check? Mine went to a car payment and car insurance. Fun, I know.

the check was going to go into reserves; instead, it’s going toward my 19 yo daughter’s teeth. she came home from college last week and I noticed that her formerly beautiful teeth looked snaggly. Yesterday I learned that orthodontia has changed radically in the past 30 years. I’ve also learned that it’s crazy psycho insane expensive. who knew?

I haven’t gotten my check yet, but it’s going to a car payment and office supplies. Exciting! LOL Such is the life of a freelance copywriter, right?

I just finished Seeing Me Naked by Liza Palmer and LOVED it!! See my blog for funny tidbit about it and my possible involvement in the plot of the book. ha ha ha

Hope you’re well!!!

My check is going to open college funds for the kids. And I splurged on a couple prints I’ve been wanting from etsy.

I have a coupon for a free month of Netflix if you want it!

I’ve tried both, and Netflix has more movies and a easier interface.

I have heard that Netflix has a better selection than Blockbuster online.

I wanted to do something exciting with my check, but then I got tendinitis and I have a $300 deductible for PT and then a $15 copay for every session thereafter. And I need at least 6 weeks of 2 sessions per week. And the PT also told me that I should be wearing more supportive shoes so I just bought a pair of $90 sneakers.

The stimulus check… I guess I’ll decide once it comes and I have my grubby little hands on it. But it’ll likely just go towards the usual stuff — bills, food, etc…

Netflix vs. Blockbuster. We’ve had both. I think that I liked Netflix better. The only thing that I can tell you is that the special, free offers are kinda lame since they’re only “one at a time” movies. Meaning, they send you one, then you watch it and send it back, and only once they receive it, do they send you another. Maybe that’s good, though. I don’t know. We, uh, kinda do this thing where we, um, copy the movies so that we can watch them at our leisure, so one at a time doesn’t work for us. But if you’re not, uh, PIRATING, then I suppose it’s fine.

But the more I think of it, the more I seem to recall that I liked Netflix better. When we run out of movies to watch, I’m pretty sure that we’ll opt to renew with Netflix, not Blockbuster.

I hope 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and on and on are all healthy years for you.

Amy- I just finished SEEING ME NAKED too. I loved it. It was one of the first books that took place in LA that I didn’t HATE.I am giving it to Hil soon, she would love it also.

Guys- I bought a whole container of the Sunchokes, there are like 8 little ones. I need to get ahold of Antonia she had them in her SEXY SAM SALAD last night. Swoon, Sam.

As for my stimulus check, it will go to bills and fun times here in LA before I most likely move back to San Diego for school.

I’ve been watching Top Chef, and I’m glad Andrew went home (mostly because he didn’t follow the rules, though Lisa was kind of unsportsmanlike for calling him out). The real reason I’m glad he’s gone is that I swear, the guy is just thisclose to manic, and you can practically feel him reeling it in to try to stay on the acceptable side of not-psychotic. I know it’s edited for drama and all, but the boy seems somewhat unstable to me.

Spike is kinda cute, but he has attitude (don’t they all, except maybe Antonia and Stephanie?) and he’s a little greasy looking.

And with Sam on the screen, how could you even notice? :-)

Lori — it goes by the last few digits of your SSN. Mine is only due to get here in mid or late July. By then, I’ll have spent it nine times over, without even having it.

My stimulus check has mostly gone to pay for social activities that I was going to do anyway, just that I didn’t have to finance them on my credit card. :)

I’m watching Top Chef and pulling for my hometown boy, Richard. He’s been back in town cooking, until recently he had to leave to go back for some additional filming, so there’s speculation that he’s in the finals. :)

I’m TOTALLY going to the Sex and the City movie. I’m kinda sad, though, ’cause I’d love to see it on opening night with an ex-co-worker who I used to always gab with the show about. Unfortunately, she’s 5 hours away… In spirit! :)

Oh, and about Top Chef, I’m agreeing with Jami about Andrew’s psychosis, but I felt like his food skills were the best of the 3 that were marked for elim. Personally, I’m with Dale, and about ready to kick Lisa in the teeth. Eh, and I’m not really feeling you on Spike… He and Andrew were almost interchangeable in my mind (esp. personality-wise).

One of my coworkers at my working place told me that if you just deposit your stimulus check in the bank, the government can tax you. Is this true?

Allie

I’ve thought Spike was adorable from the beginning, I may have actually mentioned it when you said you thought Ryan was cute. I also like Spike’s personality, he’s no bullshit, and I enjoy that. I’m pulling for him, Antonia and Dale- though I do like Stephanie too. It seems like Richard is the one to beat, and so it’s hard for me to root for him. He’s just so arrogant about things, he gets under my skin from time to time…though not NEAR as much as Lisa. I can’t STAND her.

I’m excited about the Sex & The City movie as well, though I imagine it probably won’t live up to the hype. We’ll see, though.

I don’t get a stimulus check. Bastards.

I don’t know how anyone finds the time to read with all of the good TV that has been on! I’m a summer reader for sure.

The days that Sam was in town, they were teasing me that I wasn’t allowed to go on set for fear I’d try to molest him. He was at our wrap party but he had hooked up with another cast member the night before so I flirted with CJ instead. No, I didn’t try to molest CJ either.

I have blockbuster but the movie I rented has been sitting on top of my dresser for WEEKS now. I do think Netflix has a way better selection, but Blockbuster is better if you want the option to return it in store. If you don’t care about that, then def go with Netflix.

I’m going to the SATC movie! Sorry I can’t join you since I’m in NY, but I’ll be with you in spirit.

Glad to see that you are doing well after your hiatus.

I paid off some credit card debt with my stimulus check. Way to stimulate the economy.

I too am going to see SATC movie as well.

We have the Netflix one-at-a time plan. It fits our lifestyle because that’s (barely) all the time we have to see movies, especially when all my wife’s favorite shows are on and she has a crazy singing schedule. I add movies to the queue as they come out in the theater (or because I feel like it), so we’re at about 280 movies there. Translation: Any new movie that gets added we’ll see in about six years at the rate we’re going, assuming we don’t bump anything to the top (which we sometimes do).

I am guessing a lot of us have a “refer a friend” plan so you can get two weeks or even a month free.

Stimulus check. No, the government should not be taxing it. Because I overshot on exemptions based on previous years’ refunds, and because of some unexpected capital gains distributions (cause, dang it! Cutting the tax rate really does stimulate the economy and lead to greater tax receipts), we OWED a chunk of change to the Feds and to the Commonwealth. The stimulus will make up for that and give us a bit extra. Which will pay for part of our vacation and/or our younger child’s preschool. Then there is that planned vacation thing. Of course, there’s the general housing, feeding, clothing, and transporting four hungry mouths on one income. I am also expecting a nice bonus from work, which is also later than it should be.

I did ask for direct depost of the stimulus payment, so I should have gotten it last week. However, I am guessing that mailed-in tax forms are not counted in with the “direct deposit” bunch, so we are on schedule to get that check by the end of June instead. :(

Oh, the library came through with a couple more books, too. There’s the “Last Lecture” book by Randy Pausch (the Carnegie Mellon professor who is dying of pancreatic cancer and whose lecture video has been flying around the Internet). The other one is the “Bringing Down the House” by Ben Mezrich, the book on which the movie “21″ is based.

Like Jessica and Marissa the govt will be taking my stimulus check to apply to my tax bill. Oh well. I’m really looking forward to SATC! I’m trying to get a girlfriend to call in sick so we can go to a Friday morning screening.

Who’s Matt Besser? I just watched about 7 or so SVU episoded (I’ve been tivo’ing but not watching) and I liked the finale. I’m assuming Lake is leaving the show but not sure about Finn. I hope not, because I like him.

Our check is going towards our family trip to Disney World…but it’s shame it won’t even cover 1/2 the trip!

I can’t wait for the SATC movie. I just watched the last episode (via DVR) for the umpteenth time and now I am even more excited!

I won’t be getting my check for a while but anticipate just depositing it in my bank account. It’s not going for anything specific but helped me justify an upcoming trip to Costa Rica.

I just figured out that you’re back to blogging. Boy, I’ve been too busy to check. Good to see you here.

I am spending my Economic Stimulus check (and my bonus and my tax refund and more) on a trip to LONDON! And a day in PARIS! So exciting.

My daughter is graduating from high school, and I had a very big birthday, so we are traveling and going to see John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, and the Police play for a couple days in Hyde Park.

I’m not sure they had this in mind — us stimulating the U.K. economy, but we are thrilled to be touring.
