Weekend Stuff

As much as I love spending time with my friends, every now and then I crave a weekend with nothing on my calendar. This was one of those weekends. I:

  • Didn’t need to use the heat lamp in my bathroom for the first time in months. (It was in the 80s here!)
  • Slept in both days, and watched the Food Network in bed.
  • Finally went to Bed Bath and Beyond and bought: a simplehuman trash can (did you know they make $299 ones?!), storage containers, a new tub mat, and a mattress cover to replace my way too old one.
  • Went to my stupid neighborhood Ralphs and couldn’t find half of the stuff on my shopping list. When I asked the checker what was going on, she said that is everyones complaint since “they turned the store into a liquor store.” Seriously. Four aisles of wine? Whatever.
  • Went to Surfas and stocked up on sprinkles, parchment paper sheets (one of my most favorite kitchen things ever), and other stuff I haven’t had the chance to buy lately.
  • Cleaned and did laundry.
  • Got back into my pajamas and filed my taxes online, read, watched TV, and lazed around.
  • Snickery SquaresMade Snickery Squares, which include: shortbread, dulce de leche, caramelized peanuts, and chocolate.
  • Saw my sister briefly.
  • Made dough for Valentine’s Day sugar cookies that I’ll make this week.
  • Spent more time on the couch.

Now I’m finally going to take a shower, then I think I’ll plant myself back on the couch. Ahh, Sundays.

I have a Simple Human can…not the most expensive one but one of the pricier ones. We love it! I sent one to mom for Christmas.

Had BB&B not closed at 8, I was also going to be the owner of a new simplehuman trash can tonight! Drat Sunday night early closures. I’ll try again this week. I’m hopeful the baby can’t open the lid. Plus, my aunt wants some new oven mitts that will be a good supplement to her bday present.

Glad you had a good weekend! (What Valentine cookie recipe did you use?)

I wish I would have come over for the bar!! You texted me and we were hiking and I thought it wouldn’t make sense to sweat up Runyon and then eat dessert!!

They look soooo good.

Jami, I use this sugar cookie recipe. Everytime I make it, I get asked for the recipe, it is that good.

Beth, should I save you some?

Sounds like my kind of weekend. Sadly I shall never know one like it ever again.

FYI - I heard “superfluous” and “juxtaposition” on tv/radio this past week.

I ditto that! Jeremy was in Florida, and so I spent the entire weekend in bed with the dog — sleeping (both of us), reading (me), snuggling (both of us), chomping on bones (him) and treats (both of us). We only got up for real food (both of us) and pee breaks (sadly, his meant that I had to go outside with him). All in all, a perfect weekend. I’m glad yours was too.

I have (and love) the aforementioned trash can as well. It does require regular cleaning, though, because it’s so tightly sealed that any moisture that escapes gets trapped.

I had a cheapish clone of the simple human trash can, and Dori’s comment is the reason I got rid of it, along with any kitchen trash can with a lid.If actually used for kitchen trash (food bits, used coffee filters, final destination of litter box scoopings before removal to outside can), it stinks in short order. And cleaning the kitchen trashcan is strictly an outdoor activity: hose it down and dry in the sun. Well, hosing down anything in wintertime in the northeast ain’t happening.

So I have a $7 plastic lidless trash can. I stuck sticky back air freshener to its inside and line it w/the usual 13 gal plastic bag. Trash goes out every single day, and what it lacks in style, it makes up for in absence of stink.

2 paragraphs on kitchen trashcans. I feel so shallow. Your weekend sounds lovely & restful. I had one of those 2 weekends ago. It was delightful.

Any idea on whether this recipe can be halved? I don’t need 5 dozen but half that would be ok. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that article on parchment paper. I used it while baking a red velvet cake (your magnolia recipe, so thanks for that too) on Friday and it was amazing!!! The cake was sooo good I’m making another one this weekend for a friends birthday. The recipe makes so much batter I was able to make a massive double stacked cake and had enough left over for a dozen cup cakes.

If you are looking for a good chocolate cake, you should try this chocolate beer cake. It sounds funny, but I’ve made it twice now. It’s delicous!

Jenn, the sugar cookie recipe? I don’t see why not. Or, you could make the whole thing and freeze half of it.

Nani, I sent you an email.

Bethany, I saved you one.

Sarah, I will check out that recipe! And glad the red velvet worked for ya!
