Thursday Things

Earlier this week, I met with my Little, her mom, and our caseworker to celebrate our four year anniversary as a match. I still can’t believe it’s been that long–it feels like just yesterday she was 10-years-old!

You know those moments when you realize you’re just a big dork? I had one of those yesterday while reading an article in the LA Times about–the multiple uses of parchment paper for baking and cooking! Seriously. I love the stuff, and buy it in huge quantities from Surfas.
- - -
What Is Wrong With This Picture? As you may have heard, it’s been cold (for LA standards) here lately. Once the temperature hit 65, people break out the scarves and gloves and hats. It’s OK, you can laugh. But the part that bugs me, the part that I just don’t get, is seeing people bundled up from head to almost-toe. Why almost? Because they are wearing FLIP FLOPS. With a hat and scarf and gloves. What the hell people?

My Vegas weekend is completely booked now! We decided to stay at Bally’s–definitely not the hottest hotel, but it’s relatively inexpensive, in a good location, and connected to Paris. Does anyone know if it’s possible to buy discount show tickets anywhere? We’d both love to see a Cirque du Soleil show without having to spend a small fortune.

In dating news, there is none. And I took my profile off Jdate. I need a Jbreak.

Just a reminder to those of you who feel the need to complain in the comments about the content of my blog: As far as I know, no one is forcing you to read it, so if what I write bothers you that much, stop reading! And secondly, if someone is forcing you to read it, please tell me exactly how they go about doing that, because I’d really like to know.

In related news, I’ve been toying with the idea of implementing reader registration or making my blog password protected. I’ll keep you posted.

I have no question for this week, so instead, tell me what’s on your mind.

1. What I thought was wrong about that JDate screen shot: “Subscribe and Enjoy” … ENJOY?? ;-)

2. We’re going to see Cirque du Soleil in CT. It’s my Valentine’s Day present from Jeremy. The show’s in April, though. Irony: I’m from Montreal. Cirque du Soleil originated in Montreal. I’ve never seen them, but have always wanted to. I’m so looking forward to Valentine’s Day in April.

3. Who’s COMPLAINING in YOUR comments? Tell me. I’ll beat them up!

4. What’s on my mind: Where’s my plumber? He’s supposed to install my new hot water heater today. Where is he?

Hi Hilary,

I can’t believe people say nasty things in their comments on your blog. I think it (and you) are fabulous! I love reading. Keep up the good work!

Love from London,

Hmmm, I met a guy who’s way too young for me who I’m really enjoying spending time with - but I know that if a couple of my friends found out, they’d freak out at me… that’s my drama in my life - one friend has my blog, so I’ve started another in order to post about this new guy… who may or may not last past the weekend. Oh - and I’ve been single (though dating) for almost 2 years… it’s nice to have interest.
As for the online dating? I was on it - I actually apparently have a date tonight… that I don’t want to go on because of the youngen…
I hate drama - but that’s my life. dammit.

Comments are always tricksy. I think you should do whatever makes it possible for you to write as freely as you like, and feel good about it. xox

Yeah, what’s with the flip flop thing. When at Mammoth 2 weeks ago, mind you there were piles and piles of snow everywhere and butt freezing cold, there was a dude running from the Polo store in flip flops. WTF?

I’m really confused as to what you wrote that inspired negative comments - it just sounds like you are trying to live your life as well as you can and to help your little sister and your family. Did I miss something?

Jaclyn, it was in the comments of the previous post. Just a mean spirited person.

When are you going to be in Vegas? Are you sneaking out to go to my wedding?

If you find out about discount tickets, let me know. We’re trying to find some as well. Also, Bally’s is connected to Paris and it’s really well done.

Hey Hilary! I’m a normal lurker, first-time commenter, former LA Jew, now a Las Vegas Jew, soon to return to LA. ::breathes::

You can get half-price show tickets by going to this fabulous place right next to M&M World on the Strip called Tickets2Nite. Basically, they sell tickets at half-price for a lot of non-sold-out shows, but you can only get them the morning of the show. And Cirque tickets are almost never available, because they’re always sold out. But it’s an option!

Have fun in my town!

funny that you mention parchment paper because today i had a fight with my parchment paper, that left me wondering why i can’t ever find a roll of parchment that isn’t a million feet long? my cookie sheets are standard, home kitchen-size, not industrial-sized, so why can’t i find a roll of parchment that isn’t industrial-sized? why? i think parchment paper should come in flat sheets, too. the roll is annoying.

ok. i’m done. sorry.

Well time flies, I think I can now date my interest in the blog though. I can well recall the discussion and thoughts leading up to your being interested in being matched with a little. I thought then as I do now that it was & is a really loving, giving & worthy effort, and it really defines you as a person. There’s plenty of other stuff that goes on here, (I love parchment paper too!), but it’s good to hear that progress is being made on some important fronts. Like the baking blog, and new recipes and cooking contacts. So ignore the idiots & dolts, they just want attention. I enjoy reading here, but I think that many folks would be missing out if you went to a more private venture.

And BTW, having lived in Toronto, I know that when it gets to be 45deg, you unilaterally declare Spring in many parts of the Continent. But 65? T-Shirt weather almost every other place on the planet. Cheers & Good Luck! ‘VJ’

Oh.. I didn’t miss anything, I just couldn’t imagine why your last post would inspire so much anger. I hope you are feeling better, and have forgotten all about that idiot.

I stayed at Bally’s when I went to Vegas Oct 2006, and it was great. You can’t beat the location for the price. :)

Good luck on those discount Vegas show tickets. You just have to pay even to sit in the cheap seats.

I HIGHLY recommend “Love!,” the Beatles Cirque du Soleil, show. The performance on the Grammys did NOT do it justice the other night. Their crossroads stage, video screens, and all the props really make the show.

I was flabbergasted when I this show at The Mirage. At one point, could not stop laughing out loud. It was right up there with the Blue Man Group — another great show.
