Thursday Things

Every year, the City of Los Angeles sends a calendar to LA residents. And every year, I find a huge error. In 2006, they added an Sufganiyotextra day to a month that had only 30 days. (Duh?) This year, they labeled December 5 with “Hanukkah Begins at sundown.” Not only did they capitalize random words, they have it on the wrong date. Hanukkah began December 4 at sundown. The Hanukkah error I can almost forgive, but everyone should know the proper number of days in each month. It’s not like that changes year to year. Way to go City of LA!

Last week I was waiting in line at the worst Rite-Aid in the world (Fairfax and Sunset) when a man came up to me and asked me something (I have no idea what) in Hebrew. Aside from prayers and the such, my Hebrew is pretty much limited to, “How are you?” “I am fine,” “I need a pencil,” “Where is the book?” and “I don’t speak Hebrew.” I opted to go with the latter with him, being as the other responses wouldn’t have fit the situation as well. According to the guy, neither did the one I chose. He apparently didn’t like my answer and went off on me (in English now) saying that I obviously understood what he was saying or I wouldn’t have answered in Hebrew. Um ok. Lesson learned. Next time, I will ask “Where is the book?”

On The Hills, Spencer was picking up wedding invitations from Soolip, one of my favorite stores in LA. It’s the most amazing paperie I have ever visited. (Jenifer, this is the one I was telling you about!)

Today marks day four of my attempt to cross off #47 (Wear my hair naturally curly for two weeks in a row) from my 101 in 1001 list. Unfortunately, my hairdryer not only decided to quit yesterday, it flamed up and smoked too. That’s how I love to start my Wednesday mornings. Fortunately, I bought a new one last night and my curls seem quite content. Good thing there’s rain in the forecast because I’m getting tempted to bust out my flat iron again!

While driving down La Brea, I’ve noticed lots of people standing outside a store recently, but until last weekend didn’t realize it was that LA Ink place (from the TLC show). For some reason I thought it was further east in Hollywood.

Sadly, I haven’t sold my car yet. I reduced the price on Craigslist and also posted on autotrader.com last night. I was thinking about swapping cars out with my dad and letting him sell it in SD, but I think I may give it some more time up here first.

This week’s question: Is there a song that whenever you hear it immediately brings you back to a specific time in your life? If so, what song and what was the situation?

Hey! I can say “How are you?” “I am fine,” “I need a pencil,” “Where is the book?” and “I don’t speak ___________” in Hebrew, French & Spanish! Who says Americans aren’t world citizens?!

I’m 46 (as of this past Monday) and it isn’t so much 1 song but almost any top 40 song from roughly 1975-80 that makes reminisce about my teen years; even if I hated the song at the time — I was virulently anti-disco — I will turn it up on my car radio and travel back in time. BTW, my latest itunes purchase? Donna Summers’ disco hit Bad Girls.

Happy Chanukah!

I find that many songs can remind me of a certain time, place or situation - the really really annoying song Mambo #5 - “a little bit of Monica in my life” by Lou Bega … Whenever I hear that song, I cringe because it is SO annoying and then I smile because I remember my first trip to Israel during the Summer of 1999. I went to visit a friend and had a wonderful time exploring Israel with a really cute Sabra!

Happy Chanukah and good luck selling your car.

Two Princes by Spin Doctors. Senior Year of HS - this song was always playing on the radio when we were cruising.

That Hebrew exchange you had and your decision to ask where the book is next time? Freakin’ hilarious!!

Every song that reminds me of a situation is a time when I “thought” I was in love with someone. The songs vary. The, uh, boys vary. But each time I hear one of those songs now, I shudder to think that I was thought that THAT was love.

During my first year of rabbinical school, I would tentatively use my Hebrew to ask such important questions as “Aifo hasheiruteem?” (Where’s the bathroom?) only to be confounded and befuddled by the rapid-fire Hebraic answer.

[of course, I was too green to understand that the answer to all directional queries is the same: "yashar, yashar, yashar....yemina, yashar, yashar, yashar, eh.... s'mola, v'sham!" which means "straight, straight, straight...right, straight, straight, straight, um...left, and there!"]

In any event, the song “Red, Red Wine” reminds me of Jami and our Israel trip (just 20 years ago!!). ;)

There are SO many songs that remind me of various times gone by. Definitely think of Rebecca and Israel with “Red, Red Wine.” But the one that immediately came to mind is Squeeze’s “Tempted”… and a boy (of course), and a conversation in a random stairwell, and some other memories I shouldn’t be dredging up! :-)

Tainted Love, it reminds me of a trip I took with a friend to Toronto to celebrate the New Year (don’t ask me why). We visited a couple of clubs and Tainted Love was the big song of the night. I even bought the single while I was there. The song started getting play on KROQ a couple months later, so I felt very cool for a minute.

Oh, here’s another: My Angel is a Centerfold, which my homeroom class in grade 10 used to sing about our teacher, substituting her name: My Lynnie is a Centerfold. She was quite the beast.

And the last sentence of my previous comment? The one that made no sense? Should have been “But each time I hear one of those songs now, I shudder to think that THAT was what I thought love was.”

It’s a free calendar right? I never complain about free stuff, if you want a correct calendar you gotta pay more than nothing for it.

The calendar thing reminds me of an old “Broom Hilda” cartoon. Irwin the Troll has a stand that says, “Questions answered, five cents.” So Broom Hilda asks him, “What is the capital of Belgium?”

“Tulsa!” replies Irwin.

“You moron! Tulsa is not the capital of Belgium!” says Hilda.

Irwin says, “Oh, you want to talk to my partner over there,” and points to the buzzard, who has his own stand that says, “Questions answered CORRECTLY, one dollar.”

Is there an article in any of your local newspapers about the calendar snafu? If so, can you provide a date or a link?

As far as selling the car on sutotrader is concerned, it took a week or so before I got a response from a buyer. Good luck! Maybe you should post a “for sale” sign right on the car? Or go by the local colleges and post for sale signs in the student centers?

Song? Let’s see . . . There are too many. One of my problems is that I associated with a bunch of people in college who liked to write song parodies (mostly about the college). As a result, I learned some tunes that way before I learned the real songs. Crazy, isn’t it? So when I hear the “real song” I tend to think back to my college days and the parodies that my friends wrote. The songs include “Breakfast in America,” “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “Camelot,” “All for the Best,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” and several others.

If you reduce your car to $0, I will be willing to accept it.

That is all.
