Thursday Things

First off, a very happy birthday to Julie, her birthday was yesterday!
- - -
Tuesday night I had dinner with my sister, aunt, and cousin at La Buca on Melrose. This was the first time I’ve been back since the remodel, and the place looks completely different. They have a nice (wine only) bar now (the last time I was there they didn’t have a liquor license) and gone is the cute, rustic feel the restaurant had prior to the renovation. Oh well. After dinner, we headed to Club 1160 so my cousin could participate in the jazz jam session. It was really cool, a lot of fun, and I think Jason was the best musician there.
- - -
In writers’ strike news, my sister (an assistant) will be out a job November 30; her boss (a producer) got the boot yesterday; and DG (a grip) can’t find any work. The trickle down affect in action. Bethany was planning on leaving the industry at the end of the year anyway, so it’s not a hardship for her.

However, with all of these writers out of work, I may find more competition in my job search. Why yes, it is all about me today.
- - -
In random news, I’ve been hearing those OnStar commercials a lot lately, and they seriously make me want to cry. Do you know the ones I’m talking about?
- - -
I’m going to stay in town for Christmas this year (there’s nothing like LA on Christmas–the city empties out and it is awesome!). If any of my non-Christmas celebrating friends will be in town and want to do the Jewish Christmas thing (movie and Chinese food) or volunteer somewhere, let me know!
- - -
Apparently I’m an idiot, because I can’t figure out how to charge my iPod without using the USB cord. Is there something I can buy to charge it the old fashioned way using you know, a plug in the wall? The reason I ask is because I’m not sure I want to shlep my laptop with me to Texas.
- - -
I want to join a book club again, preferably a co-ed one. Anyone know of any?
- - -
Hanukkah is December 5 this year and I just about finished shopping for it and my sister’s and dad’s birthdays as well! Most of the stuff I bought online–I love the Internet.
- - -
I had a follow-up dermatologist appointment so he could see how the moles he removed are healing. While I was there, I asked him to please remove more of those white bumps that I have around my eyes and on my eyelid. This time I remembered to ask what they are called–milia (aka whiteheads, who knew?). He again reminded me they are from getting older. When I whined to him about the little creases next to my eyes when I smile, he offered me botox. I declined so then he offered up a laser. I declined that too so then he suggested a $120 bottle of eye cream. Ahh, to be a Beverly Hills dermatologist.
- - -
I want to see Confessions of a Superhero. I have this weird fascination with those people–they have incredible patience for dealing with tourists all day.
- - -
Has anyone been to Kiichi in West Hollywood? It’s a Japanese small plate place and sounds like it could be yummy.
- - -
This week’s question: If money didn’t matter, what would you do for a living? Apparently I asked this last month. Whoops. I need new questions for future posts though, so feel free to suggest some.

You can buy this little white wall plug that your USB cable goes into at the apple store. They used to come with the ipod’s. I think they are around $20. You can probably order it online as well!

I didn’t even think of the impact of the out-of-work writers on the rest of us. Interesting.

On the flip side, my husband said that since the writers are on strike, that I should write for a sitcom. Problems: (1) I don’t WATCH sitcoms, so how would I write for one? I’d prefer to write for House. (2) I’d feel guilty virtually crossing a picket line because I agree with their strike reasoning. (3) I don’t think that anyone would want someone from suburban Connecticut (originally from CANADA!!!) writing for the masses. But, really, I’m funny. I swear!

That doctor sucks. You’re not “getting older” — you’re getting BETTER! Does he know NOTHING??? :)

Oh. And speaking of book clubs, isn’t it time for a “What Have You Read Lately?” post? Huh? Yeah?

I think this is what you are looking for.

If money didn’t matter I would probably work with sick children, or I would be a party planner.

Go to The Apple Store and ask for “An iPod Charger.”

Why would it NOT come with a charger? I don’t get it.

Isn’t that question pretty similar to the one on Oct. 4? Just sayin…

Yes, they make plug-in Ipod chargers. They cost like $30 at the Apple Store. You could probably get one at Target or something for cheaper.

Amity, apparently you remember my questions better than I do. Oops.

Hil- you aren’t going to bring your computer? I think I might.
And my boss didn’t get the boot, he got “suspended” as did/will every other hyphenate producer-director not in production in LA. But it was fortunate for me, bc I was goingto give my 2 weeks dec 1, but now I will be free nov 30th with a severance. Maybe the mouse (Disney) isn’t so evil after all.

La Buca was so tasty. I can’t wait to go back.

Um, I guess I better start shopping for Hanukkah. Shoot what do you want?

is there still free corkage at la buca? that’s what made the place so awesome before.

I know a lot of restaurants are in trouble bc of the strike, but some of the bars seem to be doing just fine. I’ve never seen the village idiot quite as packed as it was last night and it seemed like every conversation near me was about the strike.

The first and second gen iPods came with regular plug-in chargers but now they do not, I presume because Apple figured they could make money on them by selling them separately. Wait, Apple? Seek profit? I’m talking crazy, I know.

I had no idea those white things had a name. I got my first one six months ago and have had a few since. They’re so tiny, only I notice them, but still. They do go away on their own, but it seems to take a couple months. I’m *so excited* to hear this is about me become an old fart.

I know what OnStar commercials you’re talking about! I can understand why you’d get emotional about them. They’re intense!

Target sells IPOD accessories a little cheaper than Apple. I just had to replace my USB connector that my dog chewed thru ($%*! dog) and it was about 20% less than the Apple one. Plus, I did not have to schelp to the mall.

Of course the strike is going to have an effect on the rest of us. It’s going to eff L.A. up real bad.

Hey, laughlines are a good thing since they are evidence of laughter.

You are definitely at the age when the skin starts changing. Time to embrace the idea that a beautiful woman’s face comes with lines.

The thing that I appreciate about getting older is wisdom. I don’t have to make the same mistakes I already made. And having made so many, I can see them coming now.

When I had great skin, I was always SURPRISED when life through me a curve. And I was so easily disappointed! The hard part now is not to get cynical.

I got a charger via overstock.com for a fraction of the cost. I bought a set that also included a car charger and a bunch of other gizmos.

If you need to get a computer hook up in H-town, come on over.

A good question for next week: What is your favorite pair of shoes and why?

or

What’s the one fashion statement that you regret participating in?

I had the same question about my iPod. I was convinced I had accidentally thrown away the charger when I opened the package. I was wrong! I bought one at the Apple store when I realized I was charger-less.

Honestly, I don’t think you’re in any danger of competition with striking writers, as we’re supposed to devote 20 hours a week to picketing, so the full-time job thing is tricky.

Also, I heard word on the line yesterday about a “singles’ strike.” The picket lines are pretty social so I guess it just made sense, but seeing as how a good portion of writers are a) male and b) Jewish, there’s some great odds. If I was single, I’d totally check it out!

A bit off-topic, but I wanted to tell you this story to give you a chuckle . . .

More about the chipster-topped brownies: Remember how I told you that I made these brownies with mint chips in the cookie dough topping? Well, they came out pretty well, and I took them to a work party. Yes, they were all consumed.

So a few days later this woman in the office comes up to me, and says that she brought one of the brownies home for her husband to try. He liked them so much that he declared that he wanted to marry the woman who made them (and he’s 60-something and Polish). It was pretty funny when I told her that I made them, myself, from scratch, though with some help from my seven-year-old son! I made sure to e-mail her the link to the recipe at your Nosh With Me webpage.

So in conjunction with the Slackmistress’s posting above, visit the picket line with your brownies. And only date these guys after they have paying jobs again! LOL

Hey Hilary,

It was so great to see you and Bethany in LA! And you really were a trooper to stay out so late with us on a school night. I’m glad you had a good time at the Jam. However, if that’s the best session in town, my whole opinion of the LA music scene has changed! Next time I’m down (hopefully in January) we’ll search out some others to compare and contrast. It just doesn’t feel like a good session to me unless I get a good ass-kicking!

JTP
