Fire News*

I know most of you will find this post boring, but I have some family who read the blog so I figured this can help keep them updated on what’s going on.

The latest, Tuesday afternoon: My parents are allowed to go back home. Woohoo!

Please think good thoughts for everyone affected by the fires, especially the firefighters out there battling the blazes.

News updates here and cool map here.

(Updates up top)

Thanks to everyone who emailed me asking about the fires. My sister and I are far from any of the flames. However, my parents are without power and are in the process of packing up photos and important paperwork because they are in the possible evacuation area of one have been ordered to evacuate because of the San Diego fires. My dad waited in a huge line to get gas this morning in case they get the order to evacuate. Julie and her family evacuated from San Marcos to a beach house, the OC attorney I used to date is all packed and ready to leave his house in Irvine as well, and some high school friends have also evacuated. Locally, a bunch of co-workers up in Santa Clarita have been evacuated and others in Topanga Canyon/Malibu area are ready to go.

Monday afternoon: I have no clue what’s going on now. Looks like they may be back home. I’ll keep you posted.

7:30 p.m. Monday: Earlier this evening, my parents received the Reverse 911 call telling them to be ready to evacuate at any time. It’s now officially time to leave, and they are heading out to a motel. All of our friends have also been evacuated. It’s crazy to think that everyone we know in San Diego County (all of our friends live in North County) was forced out of their homes. Scary, scary stuff.

Tuesday morning: My parents are still out of their house, and are looking for a hotel to stay at tonight as the motel they stayed at last night was kind of seedy (but yes, safe and out of harm’s way which is what is important here). Unfortunately, every hotel in San Diego is booked, so if you have an in with a hotel chain, please let me know. (They can’t stay with friends because all of their friends have also evacuated.)

I think about those firefighters everytime I hear about western US wildfires. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like. Where are your parents evacuating to? I seem to recall they have a dog. Is s/he very stressed out? Are they going somewhere pet friendly?

Barbara E., they are going down to my dad’s office in Mission Valley. I’m not sure where they will spend the night yet, I am waiting for my mom to call me. (They’re not supposed to use cell phones because the lines should be left open for emergency personnel.) Scary shit!

Mom said the dog is fine, but just confused as to why he can’t go outside and into the pool. Thank goodness dad has enough food to food half of san diego county from their costco cupboards alone.

Hi all: We are staying in the house right now. there is only a voluntary evacuation in “portions” of Del Mar. So we will wait until it becomes mandatory…or not, hopefully. We got a res at a hotel near the office. The nice hotels, hiltons, marriots, omni, etc are already booked. A very large neighborhood just east of the 5 ( we are west of the 5) has been evacuated since 6am. And, most of them have money so they booked all the good hotels. About 30.000 ppl live in that area…it is Carmel Valley. Believe it or not, we are 3/4 mile from the ocean and our little village is threatened. Our fire chief said he doesn’t expect the fire to stop until it reaches the coast!!!!!!!!!!!! Let us hope he is really wrong. However, the weather is perfect for fire storms. Thanks for thinking of us. Will keep you all informed thru Hil and Bethany.

Hey Hil,

I hope all is well. I know one of my step sisters in Rancho Bernardo area is evacuated, went to a friend’s, where they were then evacuated from again. Another step sister is in Santa Clarita and packed and waiting to hear. They’ve been told to voluntarily leave once so far. Sounds like my brother, near Cowle’s Mtn. should be fine, but all in all, sad. I always think of the animals. Reminds me of our fires up the block from me in Los Feliz just a few months back.

Thanks for the update and the map. I was craving a map after listening to TV and radio coverage all morning.

Definitely sending out good thoughts and prayers even.

It was nice to read about your folks bringin eye drop help to the Stadium. I’m sure it will be very welcome with all the smoke in the air!
