Thursday Things

Thanks to Keith, I spent entirely too long looking at this ecard site. It’s absolutely hysterical.

I finally booked my flight to Seattle! I’m so excited to see my cousin and his fiancee and go to Bumbershoot and hear awesome music. I also found out my aunt and uncle will be visiting then too, so I’m stoked.

Speaking of my aunt: When I was a kid, I would fly up and visit her in Palo Alto and she’d take me into the city for pizza and then we’d come back home and do each other nails (guess who had the better manicure). She’s in LA this week, so tonight, she and my sister and I are going for margaritas and Mexican food. Not exactly the same as 20 years ago, but just as special.

Since I’ve added jogging to my walking, I noticed I’ve been getting blisters on the sides of my toes. Anyone know a way to prevent this, besides putting band-aids there?

In related to walking news, the “sport headphones” I bought are a piece of junk so the search for the perfect headphones is back on. I need a pair that a) don’t hurt; b) stay in/on my ears comfortably; and c) won’t slip off when I sweat. Right now, I’m back to using old school headphones that came with my Sports Walkman (you remember it, it was bright yellow and has an armband, and it’s from um, 1990-something). Please help me find some new earphones so I can stop embarrassing myself.

Happy 4th, Minus Some StripesYesterday, my friend Karrin and I went to Randi and Michael’s really cute new place in humid and not-so-sunny-Santa Monica for a barbecue. The party was a lot of fun, I got to see Amy, Nanette and her husband Brent, and I made a mini cupcake flag for the occasion. It was a hit.

Can someone please tell me why the new Arrowhead bottles with the blue flip caps are near impossible to open?

This week’s question: What was the best dessert you’ve ever had, and where did you have it?
- - -
And that ends a really all over the place Thursday Things. I keep thinking today is Monday.

The best dessert I’ve ever had was at Max’s Downtown (in Hartford, Connecticut). It was a creme brulee trio. One traditional. One chocolate. One citrus.

I’m drooling just remembering it.

The mini cupcake flag is awesome, very cute and I imagine quite tasty.

To prevent blisters on your toes try using Body Glide (anti-chafing/anti-blister stick). You can buy it at a bike store or REI type store and it does wonders (I do triathlons and can attest to it doing its job quite well).

The best dessert I ever had was a Creme Brulee at a French Restaurant (Bistrot Du Coin) in Washington, DC. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

There are these little gel pads that go between the toes to prevent this too. I think you can get it at a Running Room (if you have those in LA) or any other running type store.

Dessert. My kind of question! I am always dazzled by specialties I can’t make like souffle.

At the Pinot Brasserie in the Venetian in Vegas (and probably other Patina restaurants), they make a bittersweet chocolate souffle. I remember them serving it hot out of the oven, poking a hole in the middle and pouring in some berry sauce, and adding vanilla ice cream. Mmmm. Perfection for a choc-oholic.

I need just one bite right now.

Best desserts for me usually fall into the flourless chocolate cake category. I used to go to Sonora Cafe on La Brea for dessert and wine with friends. They have an amazing flourless choc cake. Or if you’re further west, the Buddha Bar in Agoura Hills has this incredibly huge and decadent banana split (it comes in this ginormous martini glass). Yeah, those two are going to have to share the honor.

I use the Nike Flight Vapor Bud Earphones with my iPod when I run. They never slip off and have worked great for over a year. I run 5 days/week. I’m surprised at all the bad reviews…I guess I got an usually good pair.

For dessert, I was going to say Creme Brulee, my ususal favorite, but than I remembered the first time I had a Dairy Queen Blizzard, cookies and cream, and honestly, it was so delicious. That being said, dessert is my least favorite part of the meal, I would rather have more appetizers or entrees and skip dessert.

I second Body Glide. It really works — or at least it did when I used to work out. I keep meaning to do that again….

Fun with the Aunt that’s so cool! I wish I had an Aunt like that. :D

Best desert…hmmmm…I can’t pick! I loved the deserts I had in New Orleans, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and ones that I’ve made myself. Anything with fruit and chocolate is a winner to me.

Moleskin is way better than Band-Aids for blisters. It’s thicker and stays in place.

Also, use synthetic socks with terrycloth-loop cushioning, preferably Cool-Max polyester. Cotton socks are the worst — they absorb moisture and chafe.

My favorite dessert ever? My secret-recipe carrot cake! When I take it to work, it’s always gone by 10:00. AM. I got the recipe from a friend after asking for 10 years, and I’m not giving it to anyone for at least 10 years. Damn, that cake is sooo good.

I second moleskin. I swear by it!

As for my favorite dessert, I think I have to go with the very traditional Toll House cookie. Simple, but oh so perfect.

The best dessert I ever had was a blueberry cheesecake. The place that makes it is owned and operated by a long time professional associate’s niece who took the business over from her late aunt. Her uncle is the president of a plating and powdercoating company in Burbank. At my previous place of employment, her uncle who we used to do business with would bring these marvelous tasting cheesecakes on special occasions and holidays. All different flavors too, I might add. (i.e., chocolate, strawberry, New York, etc.)

The name of the place is called, “Bake A Way Bakery” located on 3380 S. Robertson (near Venice). Their specialty is catering.

OK, for the earphones: Get some automotive touch-up paint to make the ones you have a different color. That way the bright yellow won’t stand out so much. Either that or use the duct tape like I said last time.

Desserts? Ahh, let’s see . . . so many desserts, so little time! There’s this restaurant in Jerusalem, on Horkanos Street, I think it’s called “Angelo.” It’s kosher-vegetarian-Italian, and they make some of the best tiramisu. Well, in 1999 they did. We used to have these neighbors who were caterers and they made a real good white chocolate raspberry mousse cake. But they got divorced, moved away, and aren’t in business anymore. :(

I daresay that my chocolate raspberry brownies are quite good. I either find the Hershey’s raspberry chocolate chips (or “morsels” for all you purists) to mix into the batter, or I spread raspberry jam on the baked brownies and then put on a frosting later made from semi-sweet chocolate and heavy cream.

Remember — Life is uncertain; eat dessert first! LOL

I still have those headphones and the walkman too! My mom likes the style of headphones that wrap around your ears. I don’t love them, but you might.

I hope my (as yet unconceived) kids have someone like your aunt.

Dessert? I love Price Chopper yellow cake with sickly sweet sugary buttercream frosting. But that’s not what you were looking for is it? I also love a good creamie (that’s soft serve ice cream for those of you outside New England). I guess I have simple tastes.

You may think it is Monday, but I thought all day Wednesday and Thursday it was the weekend.

You should go to a running store and have them fit you for sneakers. They will check you for pronation and recommend sneakers, then let you run around the block or something to try them out.

Best dessert ever: Homemade peach cobbler with fresh South Carolina peaches picked right around the 4th of July. A la mode with Bryers vanilla ice cream. I could eat the whole cobbler myself.
