Thursday Things

My Tuesday night Jdate with Computer guy was nice. We had drinks and some food at The Arsenal (holy shit, is that place dark! it took us both about five minutes before we noticed this whole other area of seats) after work and talked a bit. He’s very sweet, just not for me. But it was nice to meet someone whose house has all major appliances.

Wednesday’s luncheon was beautiful and amazing and my speech went well. I was presented with an award (by the President/CEO and my Little) that is made out of glass lucite and has a picture of my Little and myself on it. It’s hard to describe but looks really cool. Anyway, much of the morning was spent having pictures taken with my family, my Little’s family, the other honorees, the honorees’ families, and some of the staff. I felt so important and can’t wait to see the professional photographer’s photos! My Little was beyond excited to have our picture taken with the mayor of Beverly Hills (who by the way, has an awesome sense of humor) and his wife, one of the honorees. [Interesting side note: The mayor is the first Iranian-born mayor of Beverly Hills.]

Last weekend, my sister and her boyfriend visited Mugged Guy’s store. The next day, I emailed him and told him of their experience. We exchanged a few emails, and in one I asked him if he ended up getting back together with his ex-girlfriend (you know, the one he realized he was still in love with after kissing me). The following day, I receive this text message: By the way, my x hasn’t worked at the store since January so that seems to help from a number I didn’t recognize. Yep, Mugged Guy’s cell, which I had deleted from my cell following his discovery of his feelings toward his ex. What the hell was the point of that text?
- - -
My sister is moving. Yes, again. Now she’s looking for a one bedroom for less than $1000 (with AC and parking) anywhere from the westside to Hollywood. Possibly also (gasp) in the Valley. If anyone has any leads and wants to save her from spending weekends driving around, please let me know.

In I’m overly tired news, I managed to leave my doorwall open while I was out running errands the other day. I know the odds of someone scaling up three floors are pretty low, but the fact that I left it open bugs me–I’m usually way more responsible.

In other stupid news, as I was fastening my bra yesterday, my hand slipped and I somehow managed to hit the bottom of my chin with my hand, thus causing me to bite my cheek. Yes, I am awesome like that.
- - -
The rest of this week is just as busy at the beginning was. Tonight is dinner with friends, tomorrow is my one night at home (woohoo, laundry!), Saturday I’m going down to OC for the day then having dinner with my mom (she’ll be in LA for the day for a shower) and sister, Sunday is the Magic Castle with the other Bigs (hopefully including one cute Big Brother I met recently at an event) and Littles.

This week’s question: What do you do for a living, and do you enjoy it?

I’m glad your date with Computer Guy was OK, even if it didn’t knock your socks off. So are you giving him another chance?

So what do I do for a living? I’m a chemical/environmental engineer by training and work in the environmental biz. For the past few years I’ve been learning about project management and trying to apply it to the environmental biz with mixed results. I am changing jobs at the end of the month to work with researchers and peer reviewers (and who knows, apply project management to it). I have found that having a (warped) sense of humor is important for keeping sanity. Well, after 20+ years in the field, I still like it.

If you want, I could tell you some really bizarre stories . . .

I’m guessing the point of Mugged Guy’s text was his way of telling you that they did NOT get back together. Just a guess.

You’ll find a better Computer Guy. Or a Lawyer Guy. Or an Architect Guy. Keep on keeping on.

What do I do for a living? I’m a freelance writer (mostly technical writing).

What I don’t enjoy about it: The income’s not stable. Sometimes it’s great. Sometimes it’s non-existent. And technical writing is the exact opposite of creative writing — BO-RING!

What I do enjoy about it: There could be a million “what I don’t enjoy about its” but even if there was only one “what I do enjoy about it” I would call it a score. I love, love, love working from home. I can do laundry while I’m working. Seriously, for me, that’s a perk! (God, I’m lame.)

Sometimes it is nice just to have a nice evening out, right??

Anyway, I am a rabbi. I love my job!!! I get to spend my time doing things that I really enjoy — reading, talking to people, singing, helping, etc. And I have the benefit of working at my home congregation — with my dad as my boss!! Really!! We are the first (and only so far) father-daughter rabbinic team…so that is pretty cool.

I make fun of people for a living while acting like I’m 9 years old. This morning, several thousand people are reading something I wrote that references Denny’s Moons Over My Hammy.

Hil: The luncheon was beautiful. And, you have every right to feel important. Anyone who can make such a positive difference in another human being’s life is so VERY important. I am so PROUD and love you so much,

Secondly, your award is made of lucite, not glass. And, the mayor of Bev Hills is one of the highest ranking Iranian American political officials in this country!!!! Pretty damn neat!!!

Anyway, Daddy and I are so-o-oo proud of you and all your accomplishments. They certainly are all crazy about you at JBBBS!!!

With overwhelming pride and love,

MOM

You do have a busy weekend. I’m just looking forward to flying back home, seeing the wonderful B and playing some mean poker.

What do I do for a living? I’m a software consultant. I won’t say what type of software but I go around working with companies to model various aspects of the business and look at ways to make them more profitable. I primarily spend hours looking at numbers and doing regression analysis, statics, balance sheets…blah blah blah.

The best thing about my job is that when I’m not on the road, which is 30% of the time, I can work from home in my PJs.

But, I love it, though not as much as cooking.

statistics* not statics…What can I say, all my degrees are math based. I’ll never win a spelling bee!

Hil- Yesterday was fantastic! I am so proud of you. It was so great to see everyone there to support you and to be so proud of your work.

I work in “the industry,” I hate saying that, and I am not very happy with my job. I keep thinking about leaving the industry, but I don’t have any other skills. I have spent the last 7 years of my life working in TV…kinda sad isn’t it?

anyways, CONGRATS HILARY for all of your amazing work with JBBBS!

My job is insane, but I really do enjoy it.

I write copy and while I’m not unhappy with it I’d be happier as a physicist or a telegraph operator.

Mazel on your award! That’s pretty cool.

I think it’s really cool that you are doing the question thing on your Thursday posts.

I’m a graphic designer and illustrator. I work free lance for now and yes I do enjoy it.

That’s great about the award!! It sounds very cool looking too.

Mugged guy is a freak-he is dating her but wanted you to know she doesn’t work there-does he want you to swing by now that you know she won’t be there??

What I do: I do some freelance writing and recruit for a market research company. I like the freelance writing and hate with the fire of a thousand suns the market research gig.

Doorwall — took me a while to decipher that one, but I remembered that’s what you call the sliding glass door.

It was lovely to hear of your awards luncheon. Glad it all went well. We’d love to see the best of the photos.

Living? You call this a living? I am a certified meeting professional (yeah, I passed the three-hour exam), but mostly manage an office for a public agency. We are the good guys so that’s nice. We have tons of meetings and push lots of paper/data for the common good.

I love planning and managing events, but hate the paperwork, budgeting, and lack of RSVPs and last minute cancellations. I think I’ll chuck it all and become a certified florist.

The mayor of Bev Hills is also a CSUN alumn! Go Matadors!

Good luck on your sister’s move. Not to be pessimistic, but no way in hell she’ll get a 1-BR for less than a grand. Not in this day and age. My co-worker found a great 1 BR in mid-city (hardwood floors, big space, etc.), but the area’s a bit dodgy. Don’t hate on the valley though. She might be able to get a deal there.

Meg

May 3rd, 2007 | 7:30 pm

I know that living in the Valley goes against everything you and your friends and family hold dear, but my sprawling two-bedroom house will be available for $1195 on May 22nd.

Mazel tov on the award!

I’ve never heard the term “doorwall” before–fascinating.

I’m a teacher. I love love love my job. I get to spend each and every day talking about literature and big ideas with a bunch of really unique high schoolers and college students. I can’t imagine a better way to spend the work week. (The only negative–grading all those essays. Ugh.)

Congrats on the award (and good luck with the cute Big!)

I’m a kids’ TV writer, mostly animation. While I got my start in live action TV, the whole popularity of reality television has put a LOT of TV writers (myself included) out of work. So after seven years, I have to figure out something new to do (law school? I do not know.)

You know why I love coming here? Your life is so vastly different from mine and so much more interesting. Congrats on the award, it sounds like a good time was had by all.

I am a teacher. I teach in a small school (200) in a very small town (1800). I teach technology Kindergarten through Sixth grade. It is great fun to share my love of computers with them. This week I am teaching the little ones (1-3) about the inside of the computer. They now know the terms mother board, processor, daughter board, hard drive and memory, although they may not get what they all do. I also teach Literacy (reading, writing, spelling, and skills) to Second Graders. It is the best, most fun, most challenging, most difficult 90 minutes of my day. Some years I love my class, some years I merely like them. Right now, I am counting the days to June 15!

I lvoe my job, I love my school, I love (most) of my coworkers. I wouldn’t trade my job for anything (well, a few million maybe). I would however trade my boss, I would trade him in a heartbeat.

Interpretation of Mugged Guy’s text: not working together = better relationship

I’m the Office Manager for a residential construction company in Williamsburg, VA (I am currently avoiding anything to do with the Queen or Jamestown). I love my job. It meets 99% of the “list” I created when I decided to leave my last job. You can’t ask for much more than that.

There’s nothing I’d really change, except to boost the housing market, but then I wouldn’t have time to keep up on my favorite blogs during the day!

Congrats again on the award. Nice to have a decent date, even if he’s not for you.

I am a software analyst, currently working for a very fun company, working on their website. Yes, I like my job a lot.

Hooray for you and your little!

I’m in PR, but then you know that based on our recent discovery of our shared Matador affiliation! I don’t love it. It’s a job that I know how to do. I like where I work but reporters can drive me ape shit as one did today. Though I have absolutely no idea what I’d do if I could start over…

Have a great weekend! I’ll be sorting through more than a dozen or so boxes from our move to the dreaded 818. Not really, we’re actually quite content!

Congrats on your award! What do I do? I’m finally working for myself (after years in the industry and creating digital businesses for large media companies) and starting lots of interesting businesses online.

1. What the hell is a doorwall? Is that a west coast thing?

2. I’m a teacher and I love it more and more, with each passing year. I just hate all the red-tape and bullshit that goes along with being a civil servant.

I am a graduate student.

I love my “job”, in the last 7 days I have only been to campus twice, and I spent the rest of the time at some of the local cafes (the weather was nice too!).

And I actually got some stuff done.

Of course, it doesn’t pay very much.

Also, it occurs Hilary hasn’t told us what SHE does…
