The Answers

You asked, and here are the answers:

Will asked: Can I get 40 nickels for a bag of potato chips?
Probably not.

Dawn asked: Hmmmmm. Seeing as you live in LA, do you ever see celebrities? If so, who? (Ironically, I’m so out of the TV and movie loop, if you name anyone, I probably won’t know who they are.)
I do see celebrities, but I am horrible at recognizing them. Most of the time, I’ll see someone and think, “That guy looks familiar, how the hell do I know him?” Then I’ll realize it’s because I watch him on TV every week. With that said, I tend to recognize the um, not-so-famous “celebs”–I see a lot of reality show people as well as Richard Simmons quite often.

Jenifer asked: If you could go to one famous event (political, social, etc), which event would it be and why?
Hmm. I’d have to go with one of those food (especially the sugar or chocolate) challenge things they show on the Food Network. I love watching those specials, and I always wish I had that kind of talent (and patience)!

Barbara E. asked: What did you name your baking business?
Crumbs! And yes, I am aware it’s the name of a bakery in New York.

Dori asked: Can you tell us *anything* about your work? Even in very general terms?
I’m a writer. I work on my company’s Intranet site and do internal documentation. It’s not the most exciting writing, but I work with a fun team and have had the opportunity to learn a lot of HTML.

Nanette asked: Which do you prefer - cookies or cupcakes? (That is, making them…)
Depends–if I have time, I love frosting cupcakes. If I’m in a rush, it’s all about the cookies.

Marjie asked: Is there hope for someone who cannot make even the simplest of recipes such as jello? (I kid you not, I tried to make jello following the rapid recipe with ice, and it never hardened) Do you have recipes for dummies? Better yet, do you ship cupcakes and such to Boston?
Marjie, if it makes you feel any better, I can’t cook whatsoever! Start trying simple cookie recipes and go from there!

Ro asked: What is the worst baked good you have ever tasted?
Wow, I have no idea, but it probably had something either a) mousse-y; b) fruity; or c) dark chocolate-y in it. I have a very unsophisticated palette in case you couldn’t tell.

The Slackmistress asked: Did you move to LA because you wanted to work in entertainment, or did you move just because you like LA? Does it feel like home here? Do you ever imagine you’ll stop blogging? If so, why would that be?
I moved to LA in 1992 for college and have been here ever since. I was a film major (screenwriting emphasis) my first two years of school then decided I didn’t want to be a waitress and changed my major to mass comm (yeah, much better, I know), then did internships in advertising and PR and realized I cry too easily to work in any aspect of the entertainment industry.

It does feel like home here, probably because I’ve lived in LA longer than I’ve lived anywhere else! (We moved from MI when I was 11, then I came to LA when I was 18.) However, “home home” is my parents house and probably will be until I have a family of my own.

I’m sure I’ll stop blogging one of these days, I have no idea when though. I go through phases where I think I’ll stop tomorrow, then change my mind, so who knows!

The Daily Randi asked: Will you still want to Hang Out With Me after I move to Santa Monica?
Sure, but you’ll have to go out here because as far as I know, there are no flaming margaritas in Santa Monica. However, my sister (when she’s not in NY), lives there, so perhaps I can visit you as well.

Pox asked: When you say that a date came up to your place for “smooching,” what does that entail?
Do I really need to explain what kissing is?

Erin asked: what web tool do you use so that you know who is reading your blog (and when)?! I use sitemeter and google analytics but it doesn’t give me all that much info. It seems like you have a much better grasp on where exactly your audience is located!
I use Sitemeter. I’ve never used Google Analytics. Maybe you need to click around Sitemeter a bit more?

VJ asked a bunch of questions: What’s the loudest, strangest or most unusual recording you own? (Should be a commercially available one).
Hmm, I’ll have to get back to you on this.

What’s the strangest, most unusual or rare item of clothing or accessory you own or something you carry with you on a regular basis in your purse or pocket?
I carry a paper calendar–the “month at a glance” kind. There’s something about writing plans down with a pen (as opposed to putting it in an electronic device) that I just can’t give up.

What’s in your ‘earthquake’/emergency kit at home?
Ummm, what earthquake kit? I put one together after the Northridge earthquake (living at the epicenter of an earthquake makes you get all organized and shit) but haven’t had one since. I think I may put one together soon though, thanks for the reminder.

Favorite Nuts to eat or bake with?
I don’t bake with nuts, blech! I like to eat pistachios though.

Highest predicted temp for May in LA, your guess?
Ninety-something I’m sure.

Michelle asked a bunch of questions too: Have you purchased any cute things lately?
Does kitchen stuff count as cute? If so, I bought these inserts that go in a box so that the cupcakes don’t slide around.

What did you have for lunch?
Pad thai.

What is your favorite drink?
Non-alcoholic–Diet Coke. Alcoholic–dirty martini.

How many keys on your key chain?
Five (car key, building key, two apartment door keys, mailbox key).

Favorite color?
Purple.

Favorite kind of cupcake?
Chocolate with vanilla buttercream.

Are you a KCRW subscriber?
Nope.

Have you ever been to Joans on Third?
Yes, only once though. I should go back soon!

What did you have for dinner?
Cheese tortellini. Apparently I’m on a carb kick today. Fortunately, I’m playing tennis tomorrow.

Smoove D asked: If you’re ever in Atlanta, can I take you out?
Sure thing!

Thanks for answering my question. Yeah I have to agreee on the dark chocolate thing…I don’t like it either.

Worst baked good I ever had was a cake at a anniversary party. It was very dry…could have used it for dry wall.

Richard Simmons?? That’s hilarious (for some reason that I can’t even pinpoint.) If I haven’t reached my question quota, is he wearing striped shorts every time you see him?

PS. Job aside, I could tell that you were a writer. You have a very good flow/style.

Wooot for chocolate cupcakes with butter cream icing!

Hilary, I got to go to the “Rock & Roll Pastry Challenge” in Memphis. I had a really cool boss who let me leave work early because he knew of my Food Network obsession. I got to meet all the announcers and I was really lucky because I got to sit next to a contestants family.

The sculptures were breath taking. When one of the contestants sugar show piece fell, it was as if a bomb had been detonated in the room. I really hope that I have the privilege of going to another challenge.

Even though you’ve been my best friend for 18 years (yikes!) I learned a lot about you…very cool!

Of course you needn’t explain that “smooching” is literally kissing. But at your age, one kind of assumes that you’ve moved past high school makeout sessions, so i wondered if “smooching” takes on a heavier significance.

Thanks for your answers Hilary. Very informative. I’ll include some of mine below just to be fair.

Q: What’s the loudest, strangest or most unusual recording you own? (Should be a commercially available one).

Oldest? Some of the first recordings by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, by the great Serge Koussevitzky. (He commissioned many of Stravinsky’s early works too). In the original 78’s naturally.

Loudest most unusual recording? Won the 1962 Grammy for what was then called ‘Novelty’ recordings for engineering. As well it might. This is “The Civil War: Its Music and Its Sounds; Frederick Fennell & the Eastman Wind Ensemble”. This was done as a sort of 100th year tribute to the Civil War, 3 decades before Ken Burns ever got into it for PBS. It involved taking out real historic cannons from the ‘Gun library’ at West Point, and firing them for the mics. As in ‘This is a 12 pounder Parrot Gun with grape shot’, and then BANG! There it was. Ditto for small arms. Massed cavalry charges with appropriate Army bugle & drum calls, advance, retreat, quick step, double time etc. Just a wondrous re-created world of sound, with all the music of the day that was most likely to be heard in the field or even at balls. All done on unique period instruments, sometimes for the first time in generations they had been heard again.

Q: What’s the strangest, most unusual or rare item of clothing or accessory you own or something you carry with you on a regular basis in your purse or pocket?

I too carry an ‘old style paper calendar’. When I remember it!

Most unusual items carried are typically handmade & marked; ‘1:500′ or ‘1 of 250′ on goods from this man’s shop: [http://www.agrussell.com/]

Cheers & Good Luck, ‘VJ’
