I Guess I’ll Stop Complaining Now

Five day forecast for Los AngelesEarlier in the week, a family friend in Michigan called my parents to brag about the warm temperatures in Detroit. It should be noted that while the weather was in the 60s both in Southern California and Detroit, we were bundled up in sweaters and jackets and they were wearing shorts and t-shirts. Not anymore! Anyway, this is our five day forecast. Jealous much?

Weekend Wrap-Up*

*Updated, see below*

Friday
I was supposed to have dinner with a friend, but she was sick so that got canceled. Instead, I did four loads of laundry, watched Law & Order, then went to sleep before the 11:00 news. I was really tired.

Saturday
Slept in, cleaned my apartment, then went to Trader Joe’s. I hadn’t been there in a month and wow, what changes! They moved everything around, so I had to hunt for everything I wanted which was kind of annoying. However, they now sell individual pieces of fruit! No more having to buy four of everything! And I can pick and choose which pieces I want! Okay, maybe I’m the only one so excited about this.

After shopping, Mugged Guy called and we firmed up plans for that night–we decided we’d just watch a video. He’d been up since four in the morning taking care of some stuff at his store (he got started early so he’d be done in time to see me, awww) and was exhausted and I was more than happy with just staying in.

Anyway, quick recap of the date: We talked for an hour or two then watched part of the movie he brought over (which he offered to leave with me so I could finish) until he began fading very quickly and decided he should head home. We talked about how this is a pretty crappy time for him to get to know someone, because he had no idea he’d be so busy with opening his store. He said if we had met earlier in the year things would have been much easier because he was home from work by 7:00 everyday. After that lovely conversation, we hugged and kissed goodnight (I was on my tiptoes!) and talked about seeing each other again, definitely way before my surgery. He said he’d call on Sunday.

Before I went to bed, I emailed Julie and told her I finally met someone I was excited about; someone I could see myself really getting to know.

Sunday
Slept in again then picked up my Little for an afternoon of manicures and pedicures for all the Big Sisters and Little Sisters. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet some of the other matches which was really nice.

After dropping my Little off at home, I checked my voicemail and had a message from Mugged Guy. He’d been thinking about his crazy schedule, and decided right now is not the time for him to be dating someone new but said, “I definitely hope we can still be friends,” and to give him a call back.

I’m sad. I give up. I totally give up.

*Update* When we talked on the phone this morning, he mentioned how his ex-girlfriend offered to help him open the store, as she has experience with the type of business he’s opening. Shortly after that, he told me that hanging out with me Saturday night made him realize he’s not over her. Oh, so glad I could help him with that one.

Random Stuff That’s On My Mind

Wow, I really wasn’t expecting that last post to generate so much hatred toward Mugged Guy. I wasn’t trying to bash him (okay, fine, maybe a little), I just wanted to fill you guys in. Thanks for all of your comments, they are very interesting, if not slightly overwhelming.

And following this fiasco, I’ve decided it’s time for me to go with my gut a little more often, especially when it comes to potentially flaky, shady, or unavailable guys. I’ve been ignoring little things because I’ve been hearing certain people tell me “You need to give him a chance. Don’t write him off so fast.” Sorry Mom.
- - -
I realized I’m too old to shop at Express (save it) when I walked in then right back out two seconds later because the music was so damn loud it hurt my head.
- - -
DG apparently understood what I said to him about being flaky and stuff as he’s been calling me regularly trying to make plans.
- - -
Because of my surgery, it looks like I’ll be spending New Year’s Eve either with my parents, a married friend whose husband is working, or a married friend and their children. Or possibly with a cute boy if I find one sometime soon. And per the doctor’s orders, I’m only allowed one sip of champagne.
- - -
Speaking of cute boys, Wednesday is date number two with the Divorced Dad. He’s coming down here–can’t remember if I mentioned it, but he lives waaaay out (so he can live close to his kids) in Stevenson Ranch, a cookie-cutter-strip-mall-chain-restaurant filled area near Santa Clarita, and it’s quite a drive during rush hour. I’m looking forward to the date. Unfortunately not as much as I was looking forward to my second date with Mugged Guy. But then again, look how that one turned out.
- - -
I am so happy the blonds got booted from The Amazing Race. So so happy.
- - -
My two week surgery countdown has begun! Buhbye tonsils!
- - -
I think a standard question when meeting a new guy may become, “How long ago was your last relationship and are you over your ex?” A couple months into dating the Orange County attorney that my friend Jen tried to set me up with earlier this year (we got a good laugh out of that), his ex-girlfriend showed up at his door asking to give their relationship another go. (They tried and failed.) Seriously, I don’t want to deal with that kind of shit anymore.

And I forgot to mention–I asked Mugged Guy when he and his ex-girlfriend broke up. His response was “It’s personal and I don’t want to talk about it.” Uh, yeah.

Thursday Things

This is a very abbreviated Thursday Things as I’m feeling like crap today. Just so you know.
- - -
The other day, I checked my home voicemail from work and was surprised to find a voicemail from an investigator at the Clark County Coroner’s office in Vegas. Turns out he was looking for information on the woman who lived across the hall from me until she died a few years ago. In her apartment in Hollywood. Not in Vegas. A little odd if you ask me.
- - -
Last night was date number two with Divorced Dad. We had dinner at Chan Dara in Hollywood then came back to my apartment and talked for about an hour. It should be noted that unlike Mugged Guy, Divorced Dad did open my car door. But anyway. Dinner was delicious and the conversation was pretty good. I learned a little about why his marriage ended, a lot about his kids, and then we bonded over 80s music and Dr. 90210. I do believe a third date is in the works. Also to be noted: There’s no way Divorced Dad is 5′10″ like he claimed to be, because even with my tiny one inch heels I was towering over him, and I’m only 5′9″. But it’s okay because his awesome arms more than make up for it.
- - -
In TV news, there is no news! Sweeps is over and the programming is all weird now. I have Top Chef and The Biggest Loser on Tivo, so please don’t tell me what happens. And no How I Met Your Mother this week. What was that all about?
- - -
In tonsil news, I got a really bad sore throat on Tuesday afternoon so I visited the doctor Wednesday morning. He did a Strep culture which will most likely be inconclusive as I had only finished my last dose of antibiotics a week prior, and they stay in your system for up to ten days. Anyway, he said it appears I have a virus (yay for a totally shot immune system!), and am to “take it easy” this weekend. And by that he means a) no alcohol and b) no group events or parties. Could there be any worse time of the year for those social restrictions? I think not. And to top it off, this weekend I was supposed to attend my first ever cookie exchange. I’m so sad.

The two good things to come out of the doctor’s appointment were that a) since it appears to just be a virus, my surgery is still happening as planned and b) he sprayed my throat with Novocaine so it was completely numb and didn’t hurt for most of Wednesday. Love that stuff.

Unfortunately, I woke up this morning with a crazy headache, bloody nose, and super sore throat. I’m going to pop some Extra Strength Tylenol (oh yeah!) then go back to bed and hope my virus and the Santa Anas are gone when I wake up.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Friday
I decided that Friday after work I’d hit Target. An hour later, I had finally driven the six miles there–traffic was insane for whatever reason. But I did buy some good stuff. Following my shopping spree, I came home, spoke to DG on the phone, then basically crashed for the night, I was so tired.

Saturday
I was unable to sleep in–I’m guessing because I slept so damn much earlier in the week, so I woke up and did laundry. It was actually nice not having to fight with my neighbors for the two washing machines in the building.

Original Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Pan CookieMidst laundry and pre-caffeine, I sent out an email to some of my friends with the where and when info for my tonsillectomy. I accidentally included Mugged Guy and Divorced Dad amongst the emails. Oops. Then I baked cookies, because I was annoyed that I did something so stupid.

The rest of the afternoon I lounged around, chatted on the phone, and cleaned up a bit. I updated all my holiday party RSVPs on Evite, and got a little sad and depressed that I can’t attend anything. This tonsil crap has really taken over my life, and it’s more than a little frustrating that I’m holed up inside my apartment while everyone else is out having fun.

Saturday evening, Divorced Dad and I exchanged a few text messages and I believe we set a date for Friday night, although I’m not one hundred percent sure. Then later that night, DG and I went to Kabuki for a late sushi dinner–damn that place is crowded at 9:00. He and I are friends. The end.

Sunday
Slept in a bit then hit the Hollywood Farmer’s Market, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Borders. (Why oh why do they all have to be so close to each other?) While at the Market, I got two compliments on my t-shirt, both from boys, both with girlfriends. Oh well.

After the Market, I tried a few stores around town in an attempt to find smoked mozzarella (for a risotto recipe) but went home empty handed. Anyone know of any stores (besides the cheese one at the Farmer’s Market at the Grove which I try to avoid until after the new year) who might carry it? I’ve tried Gelson’s, Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s.

Now I’m ready for a nap, my energy level is next to nothing today. This coming week is super busy, then it’s tonsil time! I have two pre-op doctor’s appointments on Monday (one with the ENT which my parents are coming to so they can meet the doc, and I limited my mom to four questions) then one, sans parents, with my GP for blood work and an EKG (because I have a heart murmur). Tuesday I’m finally catching up with David because it’s been forever and a half since I last saw him. Wednesday is girls’ night with Jen, Marisa, and Ann-Marie, and Thursday is something but I forget what at the moment. Then the weekend, yay!

How You Got Here

I have nothing remotely interesting to write about today, unless you want to know about how I’m back on the super super duper antibiotics and my surgery may be postponed. Or how a possible side effect of said antibiotics is a black “hairy” tongue (no I do not have it thankyouverymuch). Or about how I haven’t heard a peep from Divorced Dad. Or how I’m totally annoyed with the surplus of Christmas music on the radio. But I’ll save all that for Thursday’s post.

Thursday Things

My baking blog has been nominated for a 2006 Food Blog Award, how cool is that? Thank you Rachel for the nomination!

Especially for Stacey, a tonsil update: Went to the doctor on Monday for my pre-op. Throat and tonsils are red and white (how festive, I know) so I am back on the super super duper antibiotics. Going back to the doctor on Monday so he can take another look and give the all clear for Tuesday’s surgery. If they’re not looking much better, the surgery may be postponed.

In related news, my coworker had to go and one up me by having an emergency appendectomy on Tuesday. (He’s doing well.) I think I just lost major sympathy points from the rest of my team.

Is anyone else watching twentyfourseven on MTV? No? Umm, then uh, neither am I. But if you happened to catch it, did you also think it was a really cheesy version of Entourage?
- - -
Divorced Dad appears to have been mugged hit by The Bus. I emailed him on Tuesday (to see if we’re still on for this weekend) and never heard back. And of course, my Yahoo email had to pick Wednesday morning to lock me out. I left him a voicemail yesterday afternoon and so far, not a word. At least I’ll have a clean dating slate for the new year.

While catching up with David the other night, he told me about this new search engine called GoodSearch. Everytime you search for a term on the site, money is donated to the non-profit organization of your choice. How cool is that?

Last night was girls’ night with Ann-Marie, Jen, and Marisa. We checked out Damon and Pythias in Westwood Village then hit Diddy Riese for desssert. Yum and fun!

And finally, I have finished all of my holiday shopping (I love Amazon). Good thing too, as Hanukkah begins tomorrow night. Now if I could only remember to buy candles for the menorah I’ll be all set.

More Random Stuff

Meh.

  • I woke up this morning feeling a little out of sorts, and as soon as I sat down at my desk at work I realized I forgot to put in earrings. I hate that.
  • I’m suddenly really nervous about my surgery. I keep having this dream that I wake up in the middle of it.
  • And I’m also terrified that the Tylenol with Codeine that the doctor gave me won’t be strong enough and I’ll be crying and in pain following the sugery.
  • Is it obvious I’m a worrier? I learned that from my mom.
  • DD is sick. This is how I figured that out. Whatever.
  • This weekend, I am not: going to my friend’s goodbye party, going to a birthday party, or going to a holiday party. Yes, it will be another lonely weekend at home with my germs. What fun.
  • I’m a little upset that certain friends have never bothered to see if I wanted to do dinner or something chill one night when I’ve mentioned I can’t do group stuff. This has been a really lonely last couple of months.
  • My parents are coming into town on Sunday so the whole family will be together to celebrate Hanukkah that night.
  • I really really really want this tonsil crap to be over.

Happy Hanukkah!

Bye Bye Tonsils

Tomorrow is the big day! I’m kinda nervous, but I’m even more excited and looking forward to not having chronic Strep. What a difference that will be!

I’ll try to post something later this week, but in the meantime, happy holidays!

Tonsil-less Blogging

Just a quick post while I still have the good drugs in my system. Everything went well. The surgery lasted two and a half hours instead of 30 minutes because my left tonsil was really bad. I had no major bleeding. Century City Hospital is really nice, as is the staff. My tongue is still numb from the metal thing they used to hold it down (yes, gross). The pre-op nurse told me when she put my IV in that it was “messy.” The post-op nurse accidentally OD’d me on pain meds, so I’ve been sleeping a really long time. My mom asked the doctor if it was okay for me to have risotto specifically, because it was not on the guideline-type list of foods I can eat; yes, the doctor’s reaction was what you would imagine it would be. My sister and mom are having fun playing charades with me, and IMing with my sister is proving to be quite beneficial being as I can’t talk for a few days. As the pain meds wear off, the pain is becoming very evident. Finally, my mom is finding it quite fun to take pictures of me with bags of frozen of peas on either side of my neck.

Thanks again for all of your nice thoughts, they are very much appreciated!

Ugh

Holy shit, I’m in pain. My most amazing mom has been waking me up every four hours to give me ice packs and my meds and I’m still hurting. Once the stuff from the hospital wore off, it was a total different story. the left side of my tongue is totally numb from the clamp now too. Fortunately, my mom is also crushing up all my medicines (I knew that meat pounder would come in handy one day) for me and got me a bell to ring if I need her. And my sister stayed the night last night as well. How awesome is my family? The sucky part is that tomorrow is my dad’s birthday and I have to stay here until Friday (the doctor wants me to come for a post-op then) so he’ll be all alone on his birthday. Crappy, huh?

Unfortunately, no ice cream for me as it creates mucus, and that is something we are trying to avoid because it makes me clear my throat and/or sneeze. Instead, I’ve had pedialyte popsicles (they have electrolytes in them), ice chips, a Slurpee, and Icees from the freezer section of the grocery store. I’m trying to get down Vitamin Water, but the thicker frozen stuff seems to be easier to take.

Today is gonna suck.

Down in SD

My mom took me to the doctor this morning for my follow-up visit then we headed down to San Diego. The doctor said I’m healing very nicely and faster than he expected. Also, the pain is a lot more bearable today, except my ears are hurting like crazy now. I have managed to cut back on the pain meds, and my mom is totally amazing and patient with me–have I mentioned how awesome she is? I’ve eaten a ton of macaroni and cheese (you need protein Hilary, protein! says my mom) and have been downing water with electrolytes in it. My left hand is totally bruised and black and blue from the IV mess, but it’s beginning to look a little better now. Also, I’m able to speak with a little more than just grunts today. Yay for progress!

I have received beautiful flowers and cards (thank you!), and wonderful comments here on the blog. You guys are all awesome.

In other news, when we got back to SD today, we found out my dad needs to have surgery in a couple of weeks for a hernia. I know, crazy huh? My mom gets to play nurse all over again.

Happy holidays!

Stuff

Random things (from a Tylenol with Codeine induced haze) in random order from the past week:

  • Although we didn’t make it to the movies this year (yes, because of me), we had a somewhat Jewish Christmas–we had Chinese food for dinner.
  • Get Well FlowersI have watched John Tucker Must Die (cute), Keeping Up With The Steins (hysterical), and Lake House (didn’t like it at all). I’ve also watched some really bad TV, including the Dr. Keith somebody show (he had Anna Nicole Smith’s mom on), about 60 billion hours of the Food Network, and a Little People, Big World marathon. And other shows too of course.
  • If I never eat Jello, popsicles, mac & cheese, or sorbet/ice cream again, I wouldn’t complain.
  • My sister took me to 7/11 for a Slurpee on Christmas day. They were closed. I was so sad as I can’t have any [carbonated] soda until 14 days post-op and a Slurpee isn’t carbonated and it feels ohsogood on my throat.
  • I’ve taken two, yes two, showers in the past week. And washed my hair once.
  • Yesterday was my first day out of the house. My mom took me and my sister for lunch (I had more pasta, woohoo!), then my sister took me for a manicure and to the bookstore. By the time we got home from that little outing, I was totally beat. I have no energy whatsoever.
  • December in San DiegoToday I get to wash my hair (in warm water!) then my sister and I are going to buy new wallets. You have no idea how exciting it is for me to get out of the house.
  • In other exciting news, I put on my (pre-tonsillectomy) super tight jeans and they buttoned with no problem. I think I’ve lost around seven pounds thus far. Which would make sense considering it takes me about an hour to take two bites of food.
  • Aside from liquids, the easiest thing for me to eat has been this delicious baked french toast. My family and I thank you for the recipe Deb!
  • When the doctor says “there may be some ear pain,” he isn’t kidding. Worst. Pain. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.
  • On the flip side, said ear pain coincides with the scab forming/sloughing.
  • Additionally, I have begun swallowing my scabs. I noticed something weird in my throat last night following dinner, then when I woke up this morning much of the scabs on the right side were gone. I apparently swallowed them in my sleep.
  • My parents and sister are all saints by the way.

And in totally unrelated to tonsils stuff, my sister was wondering if anyone knows a place in LA where you can do that inflatable sumo wrestling thing. Don’t ask. We’ve been watching a lot of those MTV dating shows. Also, she’s in the market for an elliptical crosstrainer (under $1000)–has anyone purchased one locally? And if so, where did you get it?
