Weekend Stuff (and Tonsil Update)

Weekend Stuff
I’m sick again. More details about that in the Tonsil Update part of this post.

Friday night after work, I had food delivered to my apartment. The total was $15.04, so I had $20.04 (plus two singles in case he only had a $5 bill) ready for the delivery guy. I gave him the $20.04, he said thank you, and began walking away. I asked him for my change, to which he replied, “I only have $2.” Which meant of course, he got a $3 tip. (I usually only tip delivery drivers $2–am I cheap? What’s the going rate?)

Also, I have two issues: First, isn’t it a bit presumptuous of him to think I was giving him a $5 tip on a $15 delivery order? Secondly, don’t delivery guys normally carry at least $5 in change?

Okay, now that that is off my chest I can bore you with details of yet another “take it easy” weekend where I did the following:

  • Blog housekeeping. You may have noticed that the smilies in the comments are working again (you’re welcome Elise), and all links are now on the links page rather than in the sidebar. Yes, this is what happens when you have to live in a bubble and not get sick until after a tonsillectomy. You find random shit to do.
  • Finally figured out how to download pictures from my cell phone to my computer.
  • Managed to hit Target, the market, the dry cleaners, and clean my apartment before I crashed for the night.
  • Watched four (yes, four!) Law & Order episodes.
  • Realized that ohmygod, there is actually a chance of Detroit winning the World Series.
  • Bought new tops at Banana Republic and Macys. Good sales.

Next week is already looking super busy and next weekend I have some friends coming into town from Michigan and Colorado. Lots of good stuff going on!

Tonsil Update
For those of you interested in my tonsils, here’s the latest: I woke up Thursday with yet another sore throat. Went to the ENT who said it’s probably viral because my temperature is below normal and my tonsils are pale, and those are both signs of a viral infection. Who knew? Anyway, he put me on some anti-viral medication (again, who knew?) and told me to get a flu shot ASAP and “take it easy” yet again.

The doctor also gave me a sheet of paper detailing what I can expect following the surgery. Basically, I’ll have a super sore throat, a swollen tongue, and horrible bad breath. Yay, can’t wait.

I always tip Delivery Guys the same way I would tip in A Restarant. (18-20% of Total Bill, minus Annoyng Delivery Charge, if there is one. That would mean I would have Tipped About 3 Bucks on your bill.) Regardless, he should have offered you Change. And he should carry enough to At Least Break A Twenty. What Place was it? I am so going to Boycott!

Oh, and Let’s Go Mets!

I need to check the delivery driver union by-laws on how they have to carry. ;-)

I normally tip about $3.

I’d have called the place & given the manager a stern talking-to. That just ain’t right. I’d have also made him go to the corner market, break the $20 and come back with the change. NO tip for you!

Presumptuous, arrogant delivery drivers piss me off (said the former Pizza Delivery Stud).

I delivered Jimmy Johns for three years in undergrad and NEVER showed up for a delivery without at least enough change for a twenty–I bet this guy was lying to get a bigger tip.

I tip at least $4, but they have to get past a doorman and come all the way up in a high rise to find me. $2 is fine if you have a driveway and a door with street-access.

Feel better!

Next time tip the delivery guy with a kiss from your bad-breathed infected-tonsil breath.

Feel better, Hilary!

Um, faced with a $4 tip to pizza guy parked 10 feet from my door, I asked him to hold on while I wrote him a check. That strong-arm, no-change tactic makes me angry.

Whenever I give anyone money and am includign a tip, I usually tell them how much I want back, so they can’t presume that it is all a tip. In your case, if I were you (which thankfully I’m not, since you’re ill), I would’ve given him the 20 and said, “Can I have $3 back, please?”

Hope you’re feeling better! :-)

I got my tonsils out when I was 19 and when the doc says “bad breath” what he means is “do not talk to anyone who is less than 6 feet away for at least 2 weeks unless you want to kill your friends with the wrath that is your bad breath.” Trust me, it’s bad. It’s like something died in your throat.
(Sorry.)
