The Answers

You asked. And here are my answers. (Click Read on… at the bottom of the post to read the rest of the answers.)

Karen asked (via email): How do you prevent the guys you meet from not finding your blog? Have they ever found it? What kind of synagogue/Jewish community do you belong to (if you do)? What are some other blogs I should check out? Do you feel weird about the fact that total strangers read your blog?
Well, I just hope they don’t find it. Lately, I’ve been writing fewer details about my dates for fear of someone finding it. Fortunately, my readership isn’t that large, and I believe the majority of my readers are female. And so far, I’ve been lucky.

I do not belong to a synagogue–I go to high holiday services with my family at the conservative synagogue my parents belong to. Other than that, I don’t really go to services very often. However, I am active in the Jewish community in LA–I volunteer as a Big Sister through Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters and am a member of their recruitment committee. Also, I participate in Ahavah (the young women’s group of Hadassah).

You should check out any of the blogs on my sidebar!

Yes, sometimes I feel weird that total strangers read my blog, especially when they feel like they know me and say hurtful or mean things in the comments.

VJ asked: Just to add some minor excitement to the task, I’ll ask one of the famous (older) ‘Desert Island Discs’ questions. You’re stranded on a secluded desert island, what 10 discs of music will you want to have with you there? Remember now, this might be all that you get to listen to for a while. And yes, we know the Nano etc can have eons of songs etc, but they are quite fragile, and your batteries will soon run out. (You also forgot to pack your handy solar recharger too!) So where does that leave you and what are your likely options?
Okay, that basically leaves me screwed. But, my top ten would be: 1. Barenaked Ladies–All Their Greatest Hits; 2. Cake–Prolonging The Magic; 3. Don McLean–American Pie; 4. Grease soundtrack; 5. Guster–Lost And Gone Forever; 6. Oingo Boing–Best of Boingo; 7. Sprung Monkey–mr. funny face; 8. The Soup Dragons–Lovegod; 9. They Might Be Giants–Flood; 10. The Who–Tommy

Ron asked: Which is correct: Eight plus five is twelve or eight plus five are twelve?
Eight plus five equals thirteen last time I checked.

A asked: How did you come up with the name of your blog?
When I was in college, shortly before the earthquake, I shared a house with three other girls, all theater majors. At the time, I was a radio/tv/film major with an emphasis on screenwriting. One night, one of my roommates and I were bored, and we asked each other our favorite words in the English language. Mine was superfluous and hers was juxtaposition. We put them together and decided that one day I would write and she would star in a play called Superfluous Juxtaposition. I haven’t spoken to her since graduation, so she has no idea a blog of the same name was born. (If you’re out there Kyra, hi!)

E (who apparently now likes my blog) asked: What sets your blood boiling, rational or not? For me, its when the owner of my company barges in my office without knocking. I know its his company but that makes me want to throw knives at his newly painted walls….
I don’t do well with poor customer service. Piss me off, and I’ll write a letter to the President/CEO.

Mdgrrl asked: I stumbled upon your site by searching on why lame boys send a phone text message instead of call (what’s wrong with our generation!?). So whatever happened to SpeedDate guy?
Speeddating Guy stopped texting, save for the oh-so-caring text message inquiring as to how my surgery went.

Dan asked (to me and mom): Beatles or Stones? What kind of wine do you like? How many numbers do you have programmed into your cell-phone? What’s the most expensive item you’ve ever lost? Favorite Jewish holiday? Which three countries would you most like to visit? If Kirk Gibson had a blog, would you leave him mean comments?
Neither.

Pinot noir. And no, I have not seen Sideways. I drank pinot noir before the movie was even released, that’s how cool I am.

I have 57 numbers programmed into my cell phone. Is that good? And how the hell does my mom have 114 numbers in hers?

Most expensive item I’ve lost? Hmm. I’m really good about not losing stuff, so I’ll have to go with a tiny diamond stud earring I got as part of a set from my parents (I think for my bat mitzvah). But I lost it many years ago, and the set has since been upgraded.

My favorite Jewish holiday would have to be Rosh Hashana, because we usually (save for this year), have about 50 people at our house for dinner after services the second night. We’ve celebrated with the same families since we moved to California, and it’s always a lot of fun seeing everyone and catch up.

I would like to return to France and Israel, and go to Italy for the first time.

Yes, if Kirk Gibson had a blog, I would leave him mean comments. Daily.

Dori asked: My question is: how do you get your readers to comment so generously? My people read, read, read but do they comment? Too infrequently.
That is because I have the best readers ever. Actually, I don’t know what happened other than some time last year everyone suddenly became very vocal. And it’s been a lot of fun ever since! (Go visit Dori and show her some comment love.)

How is it that we have been best friends for going on 18 years (oh my gosh we are old!) and I’ve never listened to the majority of the CDs that are your favorite?

Also…I’ve yet to listen to the Soup Dragons CD you burned for me (how fun was that concert??) since all my time in the car revolves around listening to Winnie The Pooh counting on DVD…but I am now determined to bring it to work and listen to it all day tomorrow :)

I was curious about your blog name, too. I thought it was some sort of play on words and “jux” in your URL would be pronounced “Jew” so you’d be “Super Jew.” Silly, I know.

Nanette that is funny! I just didn’t know what to use as the domain, because superfluousjuxtaposition.com is so long (and half the time I type it incorrectly), and I figured superjux.com was a somewhat shortened version of it.

I always thought it was “Super Jew” too!

The first concert I ever went to was INXS. Opening act: The Soup Dragons. So that was the first live band I ever saw.

And if you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend Cake’s first album, Motorcade of Generosity. It makes my desert island discs (if I can bring 40 instead of 10).

You guys are too funny! I added the superjux explanation to the About page so hopefully that will help with any future confusion.

Loved Q&A Session here!

Barenaked Ladies! The Who! (I am so putting Tommy on my NetFlix queue. I must continue educating my 15-yr-old daughter as part of her neverending rock history lessons.)

Don McLean changed my life when I was in Junior High. I finally got to see him live last year at Cerritos Performing Arts Center. WOW. Along with the American Pie singalong, we got a blues history lesson. So cool.

P.S. My new miracle man found my blog and my post that was published after so boldly putting details in your comments. I was so happy, it just bubbled over. Had to post and bubbled lots more. He had a life-changing moment when he found my rave about him, complete with photo and hyperlinks. OY. Tonight is our one month anniversary and he sent roses and we are going to a Pacific fusion restaurant - money no object. Wowzer. I feel a new post coming on.

Reader Dan asked in The Answers, “If Kirk Gibson had a blog, would you leave him mean comments?”. You responded, “Yes, if Kirk Gibson had a blog, I would leave him mean comments. Daily.”

Mel Gibson I could understand, but Kirk is a Dodger hero.
