Enough about me, let’s talk about you for a minute

Over the past several days, I have received some very caring emails and comments, many from regular readers and commenters, but also many from readers I’ve had for a while, but who had yet to comment until my oh my god, The Ex is getting married spaztastic post.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words and thoughts, they really do mean a lot to me. And yes, I am feeling a lot better and like to think that a very long and drawn out chapter of my life has now closed. And as the song goes, every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

So, back to the original intent of my post. You guys know so much about me, but I don’t know much about you. So tell me something. Where are you from? Are you married? Single? What do you do–for fun or for work? How did you make your way to my blog? Anything.

Now, who wants to begin? Don’t be shy.

Idea stolen from Kristin. Because she rocks. And if you don’t read her blog, you really should.

I’ve been reading for about a year and a half, I got your blog from Propeller Skies.

I grew up in upstate NY and live in Atlanta, GA. I am currently residing in a hotel in Sacramento, CA for the next 3 months on a consulting job for work.

I am single and it looks like its going to stay that way for a while as I have no desire to permanently move to Sacramento.

For fun I like to read, bake (I make a pretty good Challah), and be outside in warm/hot weather.

Single (never wanted marriage or kids), from Detroit, been living in the L.A. area for about 25 years now. Work is a bore, but I love to take craft classes (quilting, jewelry making etc) and read (mainly fiction , but also current events, ecomonics) going to new restaurants and the theater.

I’ve been reading for about a year now. Found you via Ari through Joe referred from Appleshell. I’m single, never married and no children (unless the furry four-legged kind count) but I have a very serious boyfriend so perhaps that will change soon!! I live a bit north and inland of San Diego — Temecula. I work in the engineering department of a public agency and for fun I ride horses, attempt to cook, travel, read, sail, fly, run and make (but not wear) jeweled g-strings.

Nice to meet you. :)

I’m from Atlanta, but currently live in Nashville. However, I just accepted a new job so I’m moving to Denver soon. It will be my first time living outside of the South. Painfully single, but am hoping that moving to a city known for having lots of single men might help. I like to read and hang out with my friends. I’m also into taking care of rescue dogs. Found your site via Kristin. For the record I found out in December that my longest relationship (we talked about getting married too) is getting married as well. I can relate to your weekend and it sucks!

OK, ummm . . .

Married almost ten years and we have two boys. Live in DC area, which is where I grew up (though I was born in New York). I am an engineer, but work in information technology. I found your blog via Ari, and Esther, both of whom I found via Zelda. I forget how I found Zelda’s blog, but it turns we met each other over ten years ago.

So anyway, we travel some, mystery shop restaurants, walk, swim, read, do cultural stuff, and a lot of child activities. I also am somewhat politically active and sometimes play the stock market. For awhile I was making money, anyway. :-(

Hey, don’t worry about the ex getting married. Some things are not meant to be, or meant to be in different ways from what you initially expected.I never had serious real long-term relationships, but I knew when I met my wife that it was just right. Things will work out for you, too.

We did visit L.A. once. The beaches are pretty in January! Our first child was born approximately nine months later. LOL

I think I’ve detailed my provenance before: Jewlicious to AL to you. 44 years old, married (2nd time), 17 year old daughter (from 1st marriage), live in NY’s mid-Hudson Valley region, 5 cats, 1 St. Bernard, employed as a research editor. My hobbies include biking and perimenopause.

20 year old Grad student in good ol’ Buffalo, NY. As single as it gets, which is not a big deal, but I do have friends that are starting to get married and that terrifies me. For fun, I personify your stereotypical frat boy and consume large quantities of alcohol… seriously.

I don’t know how I stumbled here, but I have been reading this site for probably over a year because it seems you have a lot of fun and it’s calming to know there are still some people with integrity out there in the world.

You know most of this, but for shits and giggles…

I’m a newlywed (April 8), have lived in LA since 2000, originally from Visalia, CA. For fun I like to bake (and unfortunately eat), read, hang out with my hottie hubby and friends. For work I’m a features editor for a website.

And I found your blog a long, long time ago from LABlogs.com.

i found your blog via “this fish,” which i stumbled upon randomly one day but which is now part of my daily reading, along with yours. :) i’m in my late 20s, sometimes suffering/sometimes enjoying the single life in NY, though i’m probably going to relocate to your coast in a few months, and i’m hoping there will be some great guys out there (we can dream, right?). i love outdoorsy stuff, traveling (have been backpacking/lived in several other countries), reading, dancing, and i’ve been inspired this year to work on my cooking/baking too. nice to meet you! :)

I’ve mentioned this before & elsewhere. Very married, over educated, presently living in yes, Atlanta. (Well the *now* ‘burbs anyway). Grew up in ‘Jersey, probably within 25 Mi of where Esther grew up, and she’s the trail that led me here. My wife was living probably within about 50Mi. of AL’s old homegrounds in PA when I married her. (That’s only an educated guess guys). Yes, I’ve been married longer than most of you have been drinking. One of my degrees is from that largest of Canadian U’s, where I did meet and work briefly for Bob Rae. Presently I work for the resistance here at home. I’ve got no blog home, but if I did, I’d be all too tempted to play ‘Dr. Science’ and hey, other folks already have that covered now, [http://scienceblogs.com/]. You know that we really can’t depend on anyone else to save our democracy & freedoms, right? In any case this also reminds to thank Hilary for voting last month. You’d be surprised how many people just never get around to it. So I’m down here in the belly of the beast, fighting the good fight against the Jim Crow GOP: [http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2006/06/22/jim_crow_gop.php]

Cheers & Good Luck! ‘VJ’

Well Hil, you know my story. But I commend your success with this post. I did a similar one on “lurker” and didn’t get quite the detail. As a matter of fact, VJ never gave me so much info. Glad I read it here.

I’m off on my trip tomorrow and can’t wait to see you guys when I get back.

I found your blog looking for a recipe over a year ago and have been enjoying your writing since.

As for me I live on the Mass/NH border. I’m a graphic designer and wanna be comic book artist. I’m Jewish and Italian and very very single. I enjoy painting and playing the guitar and Guster is one of my favorite bands too. I’m seeing them at SPAC in August.

I’m glad that you are feeling better and wish you the best.

I found my way to you through some series of LA blogs that I don’t remember, and have been reading for a few months. Originally from Detroit suburbs, moved to LA for college and haven’t looked back since. Getting married in 6 weeks. Currently in final year of grad school, so I’m not sure what this “fun” thing you talk about is :) Before school, I used to read, and watch movies a lot.

Glad that you are feeling better; I remember when I found out my first long term ex was getting married , and I got a little freaked out. I hope things keep on clicking for you!

This is a great idea Hil! If I wasn’t neglecting my blog I would respectfully snag it.

I’m 25, was born and raised in The Windy City, still here and love it. English teacher, boyfriend of two years (met him on Jdate), four children: two cats (Boots and Mazi), and two dogs (Killian and Tallulah).

I spend the warm months outside with my dogs, or rollerblading and bicycling up and down Lake Shore Drive and to various sandwich shops all over the city. I spend the winter months cursing Chicago and repeatedly asking myself the same question: Why the hell do I still live here?

I found you through the Smitten blog via iVillage almost a year ago, and I’ve been checking in ever since.

June 27th, 2006 | 10:28 pm

As with Marissa, stuff you already know: Born in New York, grew up in Connecticut, spent 8 years in Boston before moving to L.A. Live on the other side of town from you, though not averse to crossing the 405 or even going over the Hill every now and then. (Except to Burbank. That trip makes me angry.)

Single. Writer & radio DJ. For fun: Drink, eat, see movies, sing, play pool, go to shows (which is kind of work, perks of the job and fun all wrapped up together), complain about our stupid government and watch The Daily Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

I can’t even remember how I found your site. Not that I can remember anything else these days — I was so tired this morning that I was completely on autopilot and didn’t even realize I’d only washed my hair and hadn’t actually, you know, SHOWERED with soap and stuff until I was already mostly dry.

I’m from Edinburgh, in Scotland, I’ve been reading your site for a few months now, and I can’t for the life of me remember where I found the link! I’m 37, single parent, work full time …. Married, going on 4 years now (time flies) with an 18-month old (you remember him– he was being coy with you flashing his big brown eyes).

Can’t remember how I found your blog, my guess is through a series of links while procrastinating one day. I like reading about your daily life.

I never have time for anything but I like to travel, try out new restaurants, cook, knit and all the other crafty stuff, drink, and sleep.

Ok, have been reading for a while now… introducing myself is probably the polite thing to do:

Born in the Netherlands, now living in Beirut (Lebanon), started reading your blog via The One That Needs A Bycicle when I had moved away from NYC and was longing for anything, ANYTHING American. Weird, I know.

Single! Hell yeah.

Study anthropology - work and fun, I guess. Rockclimb, write (sorry, my blog is in Dutch), bike, swim, read read read anything with letters. Now trying my hand (or tongue) at Arabic. Not easy, I assure you.

Anything else I can get you?

Oh, obviously love your blog but… what’s the deal with the cupcakes?!?

Margaret

June 28th, 2006 | 8:29 am

I’m not sure how I found your blog, but I’ve been reading it daily for several months.

Molly

June 28th, 2006 | 9:03 am

I don’t comment very often, but I read daily…always looking for a new cupcake recipe to try :-) Those chocolate chip cookie dough ones you recommended have become a fast favorite!

Where are you from?
I’m a bit of a vagabond but am originally from upstate NY, went to highschool in Northern Central PA, college in the midwest and now live in the Southeast.
Are you married? Single?
I’m mostly single, though the ex manages to pop up and make things complicated when I am ready to declare myself officially 100% single.
What do you do–for fun or for work?
I work at a commercial real estate firm and for fun I read endlessly, bake fancy cakes, run, go to baseball games and toss a frisbee or football/play ultimate or just about anything that requires lots of energy.
How did you make your way to my blog?
I think that I found your blog through Paul Davidson’s who I saw linked from Mark Cuban’s.

We all know I pay you to keep plugging my novel, and that’s why I keep coming back to your site, to make sure you’re earning your money well.

This week’s payment will be a little late, since I just got hit with a ginormous bill for the real, living cougar I won on eBay. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go on plugging my novel, of course. ;-)

June 28th, 2006 | 2:28 pm

Where are you from?
NYC

Are you married?
ummm…

Single?
yep…

What do you do–for fun or for work?
“market researcher by day, runner and socialista by night”
my blog primarily documents my running/training, with a little everyday life (socializing, work, dating, etc.) sprinkled in there…

How did you make your way to my blog?
found it via derek rose’s blog-he had linked to one of your posts. i felt like i related a lot to what you’re saying, especially in the dating arena!

Eve

June 28th, 2006 | 3:49 pm

Obviously all stuff you already know, but I had to jump on the bandwagon and add my stuff!

I am originally from the Los Angeles area, specifically Encino. Like, the valley, oh my god! I am moving to Hollywood, about 6 blocks from you in T-minus 3 days!!! Yayyyy!!!!

Can you be married to your job and your condo? If so, I am!

I am single and definitely enjoying it. Although if the right guy came along…

I am a lawyer working in civil litigation. I love my job, so I consider myself pretty lucky. For fun I love to eat out, have girl nights, go out to bars, dance clubs, see movies, etc.

I honestly can’t remember how I found your blog, because it was so many years ago, but I think I did a search for Jdate on the web and found you that way. Whatever I did to find you, I am so glad I did, because I gained a wonderful friend and a brand new neighbor!!! XOXOXOXO

Jason

June 28th, 2006 | 5:52 pm

You also know most of this, but what the hell…

Where are you from?

Born and raised in the Bay Area, currently living in San Francisco. Spent a few years in North Carolina and one year in San Diego, but other than that, here.

Are you married? Single?

Single. I left a long-term relationship about a year ago, spent the next six months sorting through the wreckage, and the last six months grounding myself in a solid social circle. No marriage prospects on the horizon yet, though.

What do you do–for fun or for work?

Primarily, I work for a public interest non-profit doing civil liberties litigation in the online/technology field. I also teach over at UC Berkeley in the law school and information management school. I love my job more than any other I’ve ever had.

For fun, I’ve been writing both online and off, taking tons of photos, checking out at least one live show a week, hiking the Bay Area beaches and backwoods, and travelling. I’m a pretty big nerd, too, so I like socializing at tech events like the Maker’s Faire, Robogames, SXSW, etc.

How did you make your way to my blog

Via a comment you made on Pauly D’s site. Been hooked ever since.

I saw a link to your blog on Chockylit’s Cupcake Bakeshop page, enjoyed the variety of recipes you posted, and then checked out your personal blog. I’ve been (mostly) on and (less) off for a few months now.

About me:
23 year old female.
Rising 2L in a Midwestern law school.
Jewish ancestry.
Got out of a two year relationship about 6 months or so ago, and I’m finally starting to think about dating again.
I LOVE baking, particularly with healthier substitutions.
Love cooking, particularly vegetarian meals.
Love reading non-fiction books about religion, law, pop culture, and Islam.
Love science fiction, particularly Star Trek: TNG.
I read/write (modern standard) and speak (Egyptian) very basic Arabic. Soon to improve.
I enjoy reading your blog.
Good luck :)

I think I said in my (probably only) previous comment how I got here, just via a bunch of other blog links. I love reading your blog because it is so easy to relate to. I really appreciate your honesty. Sometimes I think about leaving a comment, but then I feel weird because I don’t actually know you. Maybe I will start.

-I am a 23 year old female, 2nd year grad student in materials science and engineering in NC.
-I just got engaged, so now I’m learning the insanity that goes along with weddings.
-I’m actually from SC origninally, and the only times I’ve been to California were in LAX on my way to Australia when I was 9 and then again at 19. I have been to Europe and Africa, though.
-I like to cook and bake, but I am not very creative with it. Your tastes must be somewhat similar to mine, though, because every recipe you post makes my mouth water.
-For fun, I do lots of random stuff. My fiance J and I love to travel and generally just hang out doing whatever–PS2, board games, disc golf, watch Jeopardy or the Daily Show, etc.
-I don’t actually know what I want to do with my life…I’m gonna have this big smart-sounding degree in a few years, but I’m not sure if I will want to use it anymore after a while.

I suppose it is nice to finally meet you (sort of)! :-)

Well, you already know most of this about me, but just for fun…

I’m 31, from PA, live in Buffalo. I’m an English teacher, currently without a full time job.

I’m not sure how I found you, or how you found me, but I do know that it was around the time of our mutual turning 30 angst. :)

I was single then, now happily coupled and cohabitating with my boyfriend of almost two years.

I like to read, and write…I like watching good TV and movies and hanging out with friends.

You already know most of this stuff about me too, but here goes:

I’m 34, originally from South Africa (Cape Town), spent many years in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles last September with my boyfriend of 2.5 years. who I met after a long period of being perpetually single, punctuated by a few brief dalliances with losers.

I’m a marketing copywriter currently freelancing, while trying to figure out if that’s really what I want to do with the rest of my life, and if not, then what is it?

I love good, TV, bad TV, reading, cooking, eating out, movies, farmers markets, blog-surfing. Speaking of blogs, I”m pretty sure I found yours through Smitten.

Carla

June 30th, 2006 | 5:52 pm

I found your blog as a result of being an avid reader of StronglyWorded. I’m 52, a sex therapist and licensed psychotherapist working in Watertown, Massachusetts. Born in the British Isles, I have lived in the US since I was 29 years old. I love your recipes but am Jenny Craig-ing my way through life currently - hopefully normal, unfrozen food will be in my future!

I find your blog entertaining, sassy, well-written and fun. Great job!

Found your blog as I knew you had one with a little help from Google.

As for me, I sit next to you, well almost…

I like to think my jokes are funny, but you always bring me back to reality.

What do I look like?: I’m 6′2″ without shoes, 190 lb, Dark hair, Toned/Athletic build, size 12 shoe, 34 years old, brown eyes

What I like to do: Travel… visit national parks, foriegn countries, new cities. The beach on a hot day and blue sky. Drink Ice Blended Caramels from Coffee Bean. Candle light dinners at romantic as hell restaurants. Water skii all Summer. Tell my co-workers my jokes. Stuff my face with your awesome baked treats!

Hilary did I miss anything?

I found your blog while looking for a cupcake recipe a few months ago. Love hearing about your life in LA and dating…great job.

I’m 29, just moved to the Bay Area from San Diego, married for 3 1/2 years and have a princess of a cat, Sophie.

Love to travel (went to South America for 2 months last summer), read, was a literature major in college and thought I’d be a writer but satisfy that urge by working in marketing…

Thanks for asking!

I’m so hurt by Erin (of eringoblog) for not remembering that it was from my old blog that she found you. Well, I’m not really hurt, but it was a little more dramatic that way.

I’m always late to the party. I’m a photographer and quite possibly the easiest person in the world to find on the interweb if you spell my full name correctly. Oh, I’m also going to be a 42 in a few weeks and I have two kids. I’m from L.A. and grew up in Simi Valley, and now live in Chatsworth. I just got back from my first ever trip to NY where I shot a quick portrait for an advertisement. Flew in Tuesday morning and out Wednesday night.

I on the other hand am not sure if I first found you, or if you first found me. Maybe it was lablogs.com.
