What Have You Read Lately? (Part II)

Back in July I asked for some good book recommendations and well, it’s been a while so let’s do it again. I just recently finished Good Grief by Lolly Winston and I absolutely LOVED it. What have you read lately?

Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, by Chuck Klosterman. Loving it, but somehow hating Billy Joel more. Interesting how that happened…

I just read Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin, which was cute and full of laugh-out-loud lines. Nothing deep or meaningful, but a fun read.

I just finished ‘freakonomics’ - its a pretty good read, esp if you have absolutely no interest in economics. if you like malcolm gladwell, its a very gladwell-ian book. just started ‘ladies and gentlemen, the bronx is burning’ but if you’re not from ny in the 70s, it probably holds less interest for you. or if you hate the yankees and reggie jackson, skip it.

Have you guys read any of the books by Jodi Picoult? I read ‘My Sisters Keeper’ a few months ago and it was good, now i’m reading her new one ‘The Pact’. They are a little depressing, but both really good and fast reads, the kind you can’t put down!

I just got back from holiday where I plowed few a few chic lit novels…. the new Sophie Kinsella (the Undomestic Goddess) was good, the new Jane Green (The Other Woman) was so/so, and I read ‘The Line of Beauty’ by Andrew Hollinghurst. It won the booker prize this year, but I didn’t see what all the hype was about. If you were into British Aristocracy in the 1980’s combined with lots of drugs and gay sex, then it may be worth while. (I have done nothing in the last week besides lie near a lake and read lots and lots of books!)

Oh, Ari- i read Little Children from your recommendation last time and it was good. None of the others that you guys recommended were out here yet! :(

I recently read “PS I Love You” by Cecilia Ahern and it was an enertaining and quick read. Definitely a chick book but beautifully written.

On a more serious note “We Are All the Same” is another excellent book, authored by Jim Wooten.

I like Jodi Picoult and Sophie Kinsella books too. :) I also liked “Rosie Dunne” by Cecelia Ahern. Jennifer Weiner is a great author and you can’t go wrong by her at all. :) I’m currently reading “The J.A.P. Chronicles” by Isabel Rose. I am having a hard time putting it down. :)

The Position (Meg Wolitzer), Running With Scissors (Augusten Burroughs–and, yeah I know I’m like 2 years late on this one), Bee Season (Myla Goldberg), & Look at Me (Jennifer Egan). Oh, and a bunch of Medieval Drama. But I’m guessing that has a rather limited appeal.

Elise and Bethany and Hilary, of course…after all this is YOUR blog. Jodi Picoult is a wonderful writer. Very moving…I have read My Sister’s Keeper and I have another one of hers, an older one whose name escapes me now, that I am anxious to read. Her stories are very moving, sad, yet not depressing. There is always an uplifting situation to compensate for the sadness. I am reading The Shadow of the MInd, translated from Spanish, by Zafon. It is a book about books, authors and a mystery to boot. Interesting, unlike anything I have ever read before. Miss ya’ Elise, when you coming for a visit. When is Gillian going to London??? Hope to see you soon. Kite Runner is still one of my all time favorites. I read a lot of mysteries, “beach reads,” easy reads for fun…airplane books. Anyway, for fun reads read…Lisa Scottoline, JOhn Patterson, Richard North Patterson, Steve Martini, Janet Evanovich, etc. All fun reads….

Right now, I’m reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like it might be about. Also, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, a sequel to Pride & Prejudice (this book really isn’t good at all - the author tries too hard to be accurate to the period; it reads like a cheesy romance novel, it’s really just a big work of fanfic, and I write fanfic, so who am I to say anything? my stuff isn’t much better, but this is fun to read as long as you go into it with the right attitude). I don’t remember the names of either of the authors, sorry.

PS I Love You rocked! The Undomestic Goddess was good too. I read Something Borrowed and have the follow up; Something Blue… want me to send you another secret package? :) I have some good ones here. Have you read any Marian Keyes or Isabel Wolf??

Also… there’s a book by a Jane Moore that I just read and liked, Leslie Schnur wrote a book abt a dog walker that I liked and a book called Pounding the Pavement was a good read. For pure mindless fluff the Twins of Tribeca was ideal.

Two most recent good reads: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and The Professor and the Madman by some British guy who is a very good writer…

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Its an easy and entertaining read, and after reading it, you’ll never look at the management where you work quite the same. The speed dating portion will appeal to anyone who’s tried that too.
