Thursday Things

Upcoming Trips: Going to the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival in September then Detroit in November. Speaking of the San Francisco, my friend and I are both flying in and hoping to not rent a car. So, to those of you familiar with the area, what is a central location to stay where we won’t need a car to get around?

In trip-related news, I finally got around to posting more pictures from Cambria/Hearst Castle on my Flickr page so go check them out. Keep in mind we weren’t allowed to use a flash inside the castle.

Dating: Nothing exciting to report. I had signed up to go to HurryDate yesterday, but it was cancelled due to “an unusual, unforeseen imbalance in men and women.” Unusual and unforeseen? Whatever.

And in other dating related news, I received an IM out of the blue from Guy I Used To Date With The Same First Name As Margarita Guy. We made tentative plans for dinner on my way back down to SD (he lives in OC) to return my parents’ car. He mentioned that I may not recognize him; when I asked him why he responded with, “I look like I ate four people.” Details to follow.

Interesting: Has anyone else seen the Kenneth Cole same-sex marriage print ad? It has an image of a newspaper page with a headline that reads SAME-SEX MARRIAGE SHOULD BE BANNED. I read that part and thought what the hell? Then I noticed the subhead: from being banned. -Kenneth Cole. Quite clever if you ask me.

Good news: Without knowing about my Master Plan, a graphic artist coworker asked me the other day if I’d be interested in doing some freelance work for an outside client of hers. I must have paid it forward recently or something. Good karma.

You should try staying in the Hayes Valley area, very hip-New York-esque, fairly inexpensive bed & breakfasts, and walking distance from MUNI.

I’ve always liked the Union Square area, and the trolley line ends there, so it’s easy to get around.

there are lots of cool and affordable boutique hotels in the Union Square/ Theater District area. Check out the Monaco, the Triton, the Commodore (eat at the restaurant Canteen if you stay there, or even if you don’t), Hotel Bijou , The Serrano and the Hotel Des Arts. These are all fairly close to one another, with easy access to a gazillion places since there are so many bus/MUNI lines nearby. I would definitely avoid staying near the Ghiradelli Square area itself. Tourist central, and you can easily get there from Union Square.

A little more out of the way, but a cool hotel with a pool, is the Phoenix, in the Tenderloin. Not the greatest part of town, but it’s really not that bad and is still very central.

I just got back from SF! We stayed at the Serrano in the Tenderloin. It’s okay during the day; but I wouldn’t walk it at night. It was 2 blocks from Union Square and around 10 blocks from North Beach/Little Italy. We walked everywhere and when our feet were barking, we hailed a cab–since everything is so centralized, cab fare avg. $5.00
I’d rec. North Beach restaurant and Calzone’s for dining. Citizen Cupcake (located on the top flr of the Virgin meagastore) for a really good cupcake.
Have fun!!

I’m going to San Francisco on Saturday so I will keep my eye out for cute hotels and let you know. We’re staying at the La Quinta Inn because it’s family friendly and it has free breakfast! Probably not your first choice of hotels, but I’ll let you know how it is. I have always stayed around Union Square and think it’s the best…you can walk to Ghiradelli Square. You need to eat at my favorite restaurant of all time: FINO located in the St. Andrew Hotel (near Union Square). Also, breakfast at SEARS is great (also in Union Square).

I can’t wait to try Citizen Cupcake!

I love Kenneth Cole for just that reason.

i love the clift hotel, near union square… so nice, but pretty expensive. stay downtown, it’s the easiest to get around from although nothing is that difficult to get to in SF with Muni and bart. You have to eat at Cha Cha Cha, in the Haight. It’s my favourite! Cuban style tapas restaurant.

Union square is a pretty good centralized place to stay. I highly recommend spending some time in Golden Gate Park and Haight Street, as well as the Mission for some of the best burritos in the world.
