Thursday Things

Set-Up Guy: He’s back from his trip and sent me an email, just as he said he would. (He’s a good guy.) We’re going to a screening at the Writers Guild Theater on Sunday.

Books: Has anyone else read Running With Scissors? Wow!

Stage: Saw Mortified last night. It was great, and even funnier than their last show! Afterwards, Marissa and I were talking to some people involved with it–turns out two of the guys know my sister, one guy knows a high school friend, and one’s a cute guy (whom I believe I exchanged Jdate emails with last year?) from Farmington Hills, MI which is right by where I used to live. Yes, we played Jewish geography. No, we didn’t know any of the same people. FYI–they are doing some shows in NYC, so Esther, Ari, and David, you guys should check them out!

TV: Please tell me someone else watched Beauty and the Geek last night. (I TiVo’d it and watched it when I got home.) None of my coworkers watched it so I have no one to talk about it with. If you saw it, what did you think? And yes, I am fully aware I am totally lame. And…I think I want to marry B-Side over at TVgasm because he wrote about my new favorite summer show.

Film: A few years ago, I saw Dogtown and Z-Boys, a documentary about the evolution of skateboarding from the 70s through today. Lately, I’ve been seeing ads for Lords of Dogtown and must admit, I am quite excited to see it. Yep, it’ll be me and all the 15-year-old skate punks in the theater. I know it.

I watched Beauty and the Geek, too! I wrote about it on my site, so you can check it out there, but in a nutshell - it was much better than I had expected! The girls didn’t seem too mean, like I’d thought they would, and the guys weren’t as big of dorks as I’d thought.

I’m equally lame. Mike got a preview tape and it was much better than I expected. I liked it and will probably Tivo it, besides there’s not much to watch this summer. Anyway, there are some cliché moments but it’s not mean-spirited at all. I also think that some of the guys aren’t too geeky, just shy maybe.

I, too, watched B&TG… though it took some convincing by me to get my fiancee to give it a try (”…coupla the reviews I read said it’s purty good….”). We both enjoyed it, and will TiVo the rest as well. Personally I’m rooting for the nosebleeder dude (”…my mucosa dried up and I think I’m mildly hypertensive!”), and I feel bad for the little blond bud having to suffer his partner’s immediate bedhopping tendencies. Good stuff!

I liked, but not loved, running with scissors - but it did make me appreciate my childhood quite a bit more!

Just out of peer pressure from you guys, I watched the rerun of Beauty and the Geek tonight. It was amusing, but I would have liked to see more interaction between the couples before the final events. Did the geeks have any interesting ways of helping the girls study? How did the girls get the hopeless guys to dance? By not showing the process, it gave me the feeling that a lot of the results are molded by the producers.

As a lifelong “geek” myself, I didn’t think the geeks were geeky enough. And most geeks I know are very knowledgeable about music and popular culture. Without any dates, there isn’t much to do other than watch TV and listen to music. It’s usually the popular people who are too busy going out to know what’s going on.

Maybe it’s my taste in women, but I also thought that most of the “geeks” were more attractive than the “beauties.” But, I’ll watch it again.

haha… yeah, they gave me one at work last week. so far the only thing it’s been good for is reading websites on the bus, and making me feel like i’m actually important!
