Question of the Day–New Year’s Eve

I’m not a fan of New Year’s Eve. It has nothing to do my singular status this year, although I’m sure I would enjoy the night more if I had someone special to share it with. Rather, my dislike of the “holiday” stems from three main things. One, it’s not even a holiday. It’s just a day. Why is it such a big deal? Two, cover charges are upped, drink prices are higher, and restaurants are booked. Three, the streets are filled with drunks.

So, this New Year’s Eve will be spent hanging out at my apartment with friends. Quite a difference from last year’s celebration.

What are you doing for New Year’s Eve?

Last year I went to a cool party, but was tired and hungover the next day. The year before I took it easy and started the new year feeling great. The party’s happening again this year, but I don’t know if I’ll go. It’s a question of which day do I want to enjoy. 12/31 or 1/1?

My sister always hosts a low-key dinner party for all my siblings. A nice, quiet celebration.

My New Year’s party partner bailed on me after making sure for an entire month that I’d be free — a week ago, he tells me his parents got him a trip to St. Maarten for Chanukah and his return flight gets in at like 10:30pm on New Year’s Eve.

Me? I’ll probably be at home, catching up on TiVo, listening to “The New Year” by Death Cab For Cutie over and over and wondering if 2005 will be the Fourth Coming of Regis.

Personally, I find being non-single gets in the way of my primary main NYE objective - which is to get completely wasted.

This year? Black-tie Shabbat dinner, what with the whole New-Year’s-Eve-on-Friday-night thing.
